Called the north pier baitshop, they don't seem to know, guy said he heard it opens tonight. It's gone past it's projected lifespan of 50 yrs but to me it looks and feels solid and I hope it lasts another 20 yrs

From the state park page it should already open this morning.

My Nephew drove over Skyway yesterday and said the North Pier was shoulder to shoulder.

Not surprised, what I find strange is that people will fish shoulder to shoulder and not mind at all. If the south pier opens tonight expect a similar scene this weekend

Known in Alaska as Combat Fishing. Sorry for casting over your line, I'm just learning. You hook a big fish and no one reels their line in around you. About the same as hooking a couple fish and people start to crowd in around you because you have the good spot. They think. Get the heck away from me. I had a guy literally casting over my shoulder on a river bank in Alaska until I put on a plug with 3 treble hooks and started slinging it right past his head. He moved.

How you know they catching macks? I've seen some pictures of macs from this morning so I may go out there one last time. Activity died during slack tide supposedly.

Facebook groups plus word from a friend, apparently they were in thick this morning then died out, in my experience on those days the action picks back up before sunset. I think im all mackereled out this year tho I’ll start hitting the piers again in late feb early March

Why late Feb. early March? What do you expect to see happening there then? Those months are my favorite time to fish the piers, the night fishing begins lighting up again with ladyfish running thick which along with the ladyfish eating predators, big snook and tarpon in the shallows at night, big speckled trout under the pier, also the snapper and big grunts start to reappear. I always prefer night fishing and have always had a lot of luck around that time of year at night on the piers. As well as the mackerel during the early morning/day.

Are they checking to make sure people are taking and passing the test? Do you get like a reference code to give the fish police to prove your innocence?

I've been out there 10 times since the rule took effect and have not been checked, spoke with FWC officer several times and he didn't mention it. Was out there last Thurs and saw some folks using Gotcha plugs and Sabiki rigs....it's not enforceable
