If anyone knows if SSP is open, please do a favor to so many here -- post what you know here..... You probably know by now, but the SSP is open. At least there were people fishing there on Sat morning when we pulled up to catch bait. All the 2-3 inch whitebait you wanted for us... one throw and done.

Hour and a half drive to get there but love the skyway piers. Big fish available.

Is it worth fishing the pier in dec/jan? Might be able to swing a trip during that time just seeing what might be biting. Mangrove snappers around then?

Went out 3 miles or so. Hard to NOT catch grouper. Gags and reds at every spot just eating anything that hit the bottom. Size ranged from 8-30 inches. Threw back a sickening number of keeper gag and 3 or 4 keeper sized reds. Total numbers I'd guess... 40-50 fish? Sadly snapper were much harder to find. Kept 4 or 5 mangos and only one you'd call big, the others were just around 12". Two keeper hogs and a handful of big grunts in the box also. The rest of the day was countless small grunts, lizardfish, sand perch, puffers, pinfish... Long fun day on the water. 2' waves were a bit much but the bay was nice on the way back in. Don't talk to me about those "threatened" grouper stocks though. I don't recall a single deep hooked fish, and we were shallow enough for no baro-trauma. So every one of those grouper we hooked is still out there chewin.
