Having been informed recently from a fellow angler on the forum about a giant sailcat named Old Gafftop that inhabits the waters around the NSP, I have decided to try the SSP the end of next week. Having possibly battled the legendary fish already and lost, and never having fished the SSP, I thought maybe it was time. Any advice or pointers would be appreciated although I can't imagine it's much different than the North Pier. Hit the tide right, throw the right bait, and hang on!

I don't fish the north pier so I don't have an opinion on it, ssp has more room with more water to cover which is important to me. I'm pretty much a straight up spoon fisherman and with spoons I can cover a lot of water, and I can fish all angles around the pier, but not this time of year, cut sardines or threadfins freelined will get a mess of macks with less work

I’ve put time into both piers but ssp is home. Way more options for being able to fish the east side as well and so much more water to cover, although I will say it seems like there may be some more action on the north pier, I would rather have less action and more exploring different spots while fishing in better (less crowded) conditions. I will say I haven’t heard of a kingfish caught off the ssp in years, but I would also imagine they’ve been caught and just didn’t get talked about. I prefer south pier because I don’t have to get there 3 days in advance to get a good spot. But you can fish both piers practically the same. Find rocks, fish rocks. No action, move to next rocks. Rinse and repeat

I've found the North Pier way less crowded on weekdays for obvious reasons. No combat fishing on the longest fishing pier on the planet sounds really good to me. Never really cared much for Mackeral fishing, although it seems to be a big hit there. My first impression at Skyway was it's like ocean fishing without a boat. I live an hour and a half south and nothing down here compares. Can't wait to get back up there. Thanks for the responses.

Good advice tears, latter part of next week tides will increase to average and be high mid morning, get there an hr before high tide, catch some sardines/threadfins and fish the rockpiles after the tide starts falling, if you can stand the heat. There is a better tidal window for snappers but that's a secret

Secret! I thought this forum was where you spill your guts and reveal all your spots and fishing secrets. An old timer once took me to his secret fishing hole and made me swear not to tell anyone. He said these spots are "Sacred".

Well, I wasn't talking about a spot, it has to do with the the tides, I have some favorite spots along the pier, but they are not secret, the dolphins know where they are

Yep, If you ever watch any of the guide videos about catching big snapper along the ship channel, the stress that the fishing is best & action is fastest when they can chum them up during slack tide.

Tomorrow is the day. Going to slay at the SSP. Have did some research and found that the Mangos are supposed to be in a feeding frenzy right before the full moon spawn in July, which is the 3rd, I think. Hope it proves to be true. Got a new deep fryer and going to try some "Mango Nuggets". Hope to get it all done by about 2 O'clock. What's the worst that can happen? I've been skunked before. Feeling real lucky now though.

Good luck. I hope to take my boat out to the Gandy or Picnic Island reefs Sunday. Going to go early, like at the ramp at 5am early. Try to beat the heat.

what happens at the Gandy? My wife saw a bunch of cars there one day a few weeks ago and now wants to try it. Good luck to you as well.

Heard that all the rain has pushed the macks back toward the piers for now

Last summer it was steady action on incoming tide for macs and snapper. Id put the anchors on the pile caps and float small bait out into the current. And do a little chumming.

youtu.be/22F_vXIGXC4this technique works at the piers as well as by boat. all it takes is a bit of fine tuning, patience, and practice.
