Thanks for the update, was hoping the recent rains would knock the bloom down but was thinking this would happen. had a feeling the state was trying to downplay had bad it really was, question now is how long it's going to take the bay to recover this time?

I agree with calling out elected officials regarding dumping. However, there are thousands points of pollution...fertilizers used for all of those 'perfect' lawns...guess where those phosphates and nitrates go.

However, there are thousands points of pollution...fertilizers used for all of those 'perfect' lawns...guess where those phosphates and nitrates go. You are absolutely correct, I live inland some 70 miles from the bay but still have reservation about using fertilizers too much, those millions of gallons of polluted water from piney point touched off a powder keg in the bay and the so called solution of drilling a deep well to dump the remaining contaminated water is not a a solution but a short term fix we or our children will pay for years from now.

Long post with some thought involved...
Just a little clarification for the residential lawns causing algae blooms idea. Your grass is not the problem.
I am for the summer fertilizer ban being abolished. We have 'best practices' rules for landscaping already. They save money for the landscapers by using less chemical and only when needed. Hundreds of thousands if not millions of tons of 'slow release' fertilizer are dumped on lawns in the bay counties during May before the ban. These are granular fertilizers usually around 8-0-8, phosphorus isn't allowed to begin with. Then in October it's repeated with a quick release mix. And another lower level in ~January. Zoysia and St Augustine sods are dormant November through March. Dry/winter season is when fertilizers are applied but not used by plants. The May dump is hopefully what gets a lawn through the entire year. This is the time that plants can actually consume the fertilizer but it requires the ferts don't wash out. (They all do unless it's liquid) We don't fertilize lawns when the grass can use it. If we get winter rains, it gets washed out. If we get a May June storm a ton is washed out.
Check out who is exempt from these regulations. They're also exempt from water use restrictions. Those are the real issue with fertilizer along with the mandated dump right when we go into rainy season.
TL,DR Don't feel bad about fertilizing the yard. Your not causing any real impact.

Went out Monday to the other side of the Bellair Causeway and Clearwater intercostal. No dead fish I could see, but the water was definitely murky and could see the presence of red tide. Went farther inshore to the backwater ways of Bellair in the canals extending from mainland Pinellas County in Bellair, there were hundreds of dead fish floating in the canals. It looks like what is happening is the current is pushing the fish kills into the back water way canals closest to the mainland, so the fish kill is not visible for most in terms of inshore unless you look in the canals. The fish are dying everywhere but there being pushed into the backwater. Personally, Im going to give the Bellair/Indian Rocks/Clearwater fishing area a rest because it doesn't look good. Im probably going to fish in the st pete or vinoy park area from now on for a while till things clear up. It doesn't look like there is any red tide over there yet...

I would go farther south into the Bradenton, Sarasota area to be honest with you. I just came back from Anna Maria on the Rod Reel Pier. No signs of red tide, lots of small fish bait fish, glass minnows, and even more snook and mackerel

LAWN FERTILIZER? Y'all can't have that short of a memory, I know we're getting old (I'm 57) but come on...PINEY POINT DISCHARGE! Remember the hundreds of thousands of pounds of nutrients just dumped into our bay? This is exactly what was predicted to occur, yes they down played it, "it was diluted away", what a load of BS, it does not dilute away, it has to be consumed by something, it does not dilute away, the load which was tremendous in nature is in the water awaiting something to consume it and here we are! That is not to say lawn fertilizer doesn't contribute but heck no, this is due to the recent dumping from Piney Point.

No I do have a few marbles rolling around up there still, as i said on a previous quote that and many others also that piney point dump set off a powder keg in Tampa bay that was waiting for the right conditions and none of the gov't agencies will come out and directly blame piney point for this mess for fear of being dragged into any litigation.
