Howdy fellas. Found this site and have to say. What a wealth of information and a bunch of great guys! I lived down in Bradenton awhile quite a few years ago, then moved to PA. Well me and the family are vacationing down there and i want to show everyone a good fishing time on the SS. Was wondering if you can throw nets from the pier for bait? I never did when i was down there, and can't remember seeing anyone do it. Also I read the threads on fishing grouper, snapper and such. But didn't see a thread for mackerel. I never had a chance to catch them from the pier. Whats the best setup and bait to get them in the bucket? We're coming down the week of Aug 5. Hopefully maybe see some of you folks there! Thanks again!

Hello midwesterner and welcome to the forum. As mackerelman said, I would check the "Useful Links" tab in the sticky threads. I read every bit of information that I could from the "Master good info thread" a lot of fishing techniques in there, and they are divided by species. Go here: skywaypiers.proboards.com/thread/1701/sticky-master-good-info-threadI have recently decided to try fishing the pier for the first time this year (been here my whole life) and it is a great place to fish. Here are some techniques I have found to work out there. Grouper: Freeline when the tide is moving out away from the pier, as there are rock piles scattered out there. I usually freeline a pinfish, but greenbacks/threadfins have yielded success as well. I have also put on a 4 oz weight and kept my baitfish close to the pier. Typically, I use a 6/0 hook. I havn't found me a keeper yet, but close with a 22 1/2 incher. Mangrove Snapper: I prefer to use cut greenbacks on a size 1 or 1/0 hook. Depending on how hard the tide is ripping i'll use anywhere from a 1/2 - 1 oz weight. Greenbacks and shrimp have yielded me keepers out there. Mackerel: I have used a greenback about 3-5 ft from a cork, or throw a spoon. I have seen people pop-corking with success. None the less, good luck out there and do not be afraid to switch up your technique in a moments notice!

I knew you guys wouldn't let me down! I hear the term freeline often, guess I'm gonna have to read up on that! And practice my netting too. I can throw a perfect horseshoe that bring me maybe 1 wounded greenback or a dead starfish. Also I see guys before using ballons to float their bait out further with the tide. Is that still acceptable?? I'll definitely be posting more questions as the trip gets closer. Thanks again fellas! 👍👍

Thanks again fellas! 👍👍 I use a Balloon quite a bit fishing for Grouper out on the Rocks if the Wind is coming from behind Me to get the Bait out. The Only thing that You have to remember is Respect Your Neighbor because the tide goes on an angle at both Skyway Piers. You do not want Your Neighbor casting out over Your line with the Balloon. It is easier if there are not a lot of people where You are Fishing.
