Saturday I had a decent day. Caught 2 snappers that's awesome. But my rod and reel couldn't bring the fish out of the water to me. I have a jawbone 2+1 bearing spinner. The mono capacity is 215/12 165/15 105/30. Unfortunately I am on a budget so I couldnt get a penn or abu. Can someone lead me in the right direction I don't mind saving. Thank you for your help

I would suggest whatever you get, Spinning Reel wise you get a reel with a baitrunner feature. Penn Spinfisher does I know cus I have one and love it. Shimano baitrunner, or Thunnis are good but pricey. Okuma Avengers are nice, somewhat dependable and afordable. The baitrunner is an invaluable tool, once you learn how to use it, and figure out all its various applications.

Your fishing style will dictate what you use. If fishing for grouper, you'll want a stout rod with lots of backbone and a reel that will hold heavier line. If fishing for macks and pompano, you'll want a lighter inshore style setup. I'm a budget minded person since we are a single family income. But I've found (the hard way) that buying low budget tackle will cost you in the long run. They just don't hold up. Especially if you're serious about bridge fishing. With that said, I've found that the Penn Fierce II line of reels are solid. I bought the 5000 series and have no trouble pulling large snapper and grouper from the rocks. Biggest grouper so far has been around 15-16".(But I don't normally target them) You can find them for around $60. The reel is only half the outfit. You've got to pair it with the right size rod. I prefer a medium heavy rod so that I can pull those snapper out of those rocks. Too light of a pole and they'll rock you up before you know it. The medium heavy rod should have enough backbone but good sensitivity at the tip. I bought the Bass Pro Offshore Angler brand 7' m/h rod for around $50 and so far it's been good. I'm confident in this setup and it'll last me for years. (My last Penn rod/reel lasted me over 6 years before I bought these) Just treat them well and wash them after each use and your investment will last a long time!

With the $$$ I can look at some sale and point you in the right direction... but without knowing it.. here's a suggestion Shimano sedona - was on sale for $30... get the 4k one. Should have another sale soon! Jack calico - $40-50

As for Me, I am a Penn Guy. I have Penn Reels and Penn or Shimano Rods. They hold up great out on the Piers & a Boat. Plus You don't have to trade Your Wife, Girlfriend, Kids or fish that You catch just to buy one.
You could also find one on Craigslist.

I too love Penn reels also have a Shimano Baitrunner, Spheros, and Stradic reels in my arsenal. I was on a budget years ago like you 10 years ago and bought a couple Mitchell Avocet reels and they are still working today. Key is washing your equipment when you get back. Go to Gator's Jim's in St Pete they have an assortment of $20 reels (Just got a Diawa there). Keep em clean and drag oiled and you will catch the big ones too.

Everyone is correct about the Penn reels lasting. I am still using ones that I bought from Woolco, and Kmart, in the early 1970's. Now, that being said, to answer your question, I would head out to the Wagon Wheel/Mustang flea market(yard sales are good too). Look for an older Shakespear, or Diawa, spinning reel in a 700 size(Something that will hold 150 yard or more of 20#-30# line). The older ones had an all metal gear set, and holdup well. With any used reel, check the anti-reverse, and make sure the bail closes on its own. Be careful buying flea market rods; most have broken or replacement guides, so examine them closely. I like braided line, but at $20-$30 for power pro, I am happy with Trilene Big Game mono for $6.00! Good luck in your search. Be patient, and a bargain will come your way.

What's you budget?
What do you intend to target?
A medium Heavy Rod and a 4000 reel is a good all around combo. If money is tight spool it with 20lb mono.
As mentioned, Craiglist, Ebay garage sales and goodwill type shops too.
Find a good quality used rod and reel, it would be worth taking a used reel to a tackle store to give it a service and some new drag washers.
The rod and reel is a one time cost, it's the terminal tackle that gets spendy.
Lead weight, Flurocarbon leader, hooks, lures, pliers, snips, coolers are the pricey stuff.
If you want new, look at the Penn or Daiwa combo's, I got my daughter a Penn Fierce II combo which is light and durable. I think is was a 2500 or 3000 size. Replace the drag washers with the carbonex for a couple of bucks and it will be good setup. I think I paid around $70 for it.
Buying cheap for saltwater fishing hardware is a false economy. The cheaper end stuff is not sealed, the drags are poor and the reels if used regulatory will end up breaking with out maintenance, corrosion is is the reason for failure. That said plenty of people have been using cheap fishing setups for years and they catch fish.
I would start with a Medium Heavy spinner with a fast action, then when budget allows get a decent conventional like a Shimano TLD or Penn Fathom for bigger fish.
Good luck!

I would not buy the second one. The newer sedona was on sale this Sunday for cheaper than that price for a brand new one. I would hold off if you are looking for that one.

Nice thing about the Penn Battles (aside from them being very nice reels) is that you can source spare spools for them pretty easily. Then you can spool one mono and one braid and change them as needed. Some fishing you like the stretch of mono and some fishing you like the no stretch of braid. Mackerel come to mind for the first, and sheepshead for the second.
You guys don't have Cabelas down there but if you go to their website and look at the "salt striker" line of spinners you can't beat the price/features. Offered in bait runner and normal in all the popular sizes. Bought a few of these many years ago and we've been using them in the salt ever since. Battleship reels at a very good price.
