Was out Sunday, lots of mack fishermen near the entrance, saw a mack chase my sabiki, had another one break off a sabiki later in the day, I tried flinging a spoon for awhile but got nothing.
A couple of guys walking the pier throwing spoons hadn't had any luck either.
Fished most of the incoming with squid and shrimp, caught a few pinners...so they are finally coming back. Floated one out on the turn to outgoing, but nothing doing.
Caught one grunt on shrimp...and that was it for the day. Up an down didn't see anything brought in....but...there's always a next time!

when macks are chasing sabiki's that usually means there back! I remember an old couple fishing the very end of the SOUTH pier last year using beefed up sabiki's maxing out their spanish mack limits.

Yes the sabikis can be productive on the macks.I've had them hit the sabikis when all they would do is chase a spoon or gotcha plug.I keep 3 of the bigger sabikis in the box for spanish.Gotta use the heavy duty rigs.....#20-30 main line.I have also noticed that they like the ones that are the same as the smaller version we use for the greenbacks, pilchards and dines, not all that crazy crap thats offered.....squid look alikes didn't do squat when i tried them. The regular ole fish skin ones work great when ya can't get them to hit any thing else.
Marathon makes a good heavy duty model if'n ya can find'em.......try wally world.Damn i hate sendin someone to that place.Or if you'd rather support the local shops (my first choice) you should have some luck findin what ya want at one of them.
Toss out some dead baits, not much a dozen at a time or so.Keep that sabiki right on the out side of what ya just tossed into the water and give small twitches. You shouldn't have any issues making the fella next to you wonder what the hell he ain't doin right!

Yeah, I believe its the Marathon #10 Sabiki, thats 30 lb. main and 20 lb. leader. They are like 8 ft long, its harder to reel them up, so I cut them in half which is about 3 hooks I think. You will get cut off once in a while, but they do work. Also good for them big bluerunners. especially if you tip them with some bait.

Hell Haveto....you shoulda seen the first time i used one......on a 7 foot rod.Gotta stand clear of others for sure!I've cut a few also to make it a bit easier to deal with. Now i put the whole rig on and just retie it after a cut off or two.The entire rig covers more area and seems to get more hits.I've had 1 rig last all day and i've had 1 rig last 20 minutes. But if the spanish are active and feedin good i don't use the sabiki.

havetofish remember them heavy duty size 14 marathon sabikis we use to get at Walmart. Well they no longer carry those in the long packages. However my grandson's girlfriend sent me a Walmart gift card for xmas and when I went to spend it Marathon size 14 sabikis were there again. They are in small packages with 8 hooks so you probably need to cut them in half like we did those others. They look to be as heavy as the others 50/30 but I can't see where it says so. They just look heavier. So you know what I spent my gift certificate on. The first time I ever used a sabiki for macks I was fishing with bait on one and catching nothing. The guy next to me was hauling them in. I asked him if he minded telling me his secret. He says use a sabiki. I told him that was what I was using. He says take the bait off. I caught about 20 macks in the next 20 minutes. Completely wore out two sabikis and only 3 were keepers. Had a lot of fun though. I'm going out about 3am tomorrow morning and I want you to know I'm taking a lot more than 2 sabikis. Whatever works. I haven't been out in so long it will just be fun to be out their. riverviewsteve

Sorry it took me so long to get back. I been on a long sleep. That trip wore me out but had a ball. I only got three trout but they were pretty nice ones. Tasted great. If you count the cats, the pins and stuff I caught a few. Almost everyone I could see had a few just like me. I didn't see any one actually filling up their coolers unless they came after I left. I was using sabiki's. That's what I caught all mine on. I seen some caught on Gotcha Plugs too. I tried a spoon for a few casts but didn't get any strikes. If all goes well I'll be out there again early Monday am. Heard the macks were coming over the rail today. Wouldn't you know it. As a matter of fact it was at least a couple of years ago when I had the sabiki experience with the macks. At least that long. Sure looking forward to another one. This time I'll be using a size 14 with 50/30 line not that it is mack proof or anything. Ha! If anyone is out there at that time I will be near the North pier bait house wearing a Navy ball cap. Driving a F150 super cab with Florida Navy plate. If nothing comes up I'll be there I hope.

have to fish the 14s I bought were in the walmart at Gibonton. I'll check a couple of others and see if I see them again. Like I mentioned before they are Marathons but they are in a small package and all I could see was 14 couldn't see line test on there at all. Maybe it's covered up and I have to open it. steve

OK have to fish. I got egg on my face. I just opened one of them and they weren't Marathons they were Mustards. However they are heavy. It does not give the strength but they are heavy. When I rebuilt them I had a good time tying them. Sorry about the goof. They do have 8 hooks though. At least I got that part right. I'm going to try them out Monday morning if I can make it out there. riverviewsteve

Got out Saturday morning. First light, Macks started to hit. They were few and far between and you had to work at it. Caught a half dozen on the first run, most over 20". At the tide change they started again, even bigger. Can't tell you how many I lost right below me or got cut off. Some were 24", but not real fat yet. Bait was non-existent. All total 10 nice ones for the smoker.

Got to the North Pier around 3am. Got set up and started fishing around 4am. Bought a box of squid to bait my sabikis. Shouldn't have. The only thing they would hit was my bare sabikis. Had three macks and one small silver trout in the cooler by daylight and got one more mack a little later on. After daylight it really slowed down. At least where I was. Not to awful big. One 16", 2 14" and one 12 1/2'. Enough for a couple of meals for me and the wife. All were caught on bare sabikis. One time I dropped a brand new one down with 4 hooks, I felt a light bang, bang, bang and pulled up one hook. Mostly they held up pretty good except that one time. Had a great time though. Always remember. Worst day fishing beats the best day of working. Or worst yet. Honey dooooooooooooooos. Caught a couple of greenbacks on the bottom but did not see any on the surface. So guess we got another week or so at least. Oh almost forgot I tried spoons and Gotcha also. Never got a hit. I never have had much luck with them things. Probably not using them correctly or something. Probably not rigging them right. riverviewsteve

Jae, they were biting right below the rail. Furthest one out I caught was maybe 15' or so away from the bridge. Toss out a little ways and jig it to and slightly under the bridge, 5 to 6' deep.

south side dont really need to huddle with the crowd go a little ways more towards the 2nd bathroom, you'll have more luck and plenty of space and maybe some KING bites as well
