Check the area that you fish. Allot of places have banned the use of gas lanterns.

Jab, This sounds interesting... greenmagnetonline.com/Welcome.htmlAs for a lantern I just have a propane coleman lantern. I have used this at the skyway before but I do not honestly know if it is banned as bodysnatcher mentioned above by different places. I usually tie a rope to the handle and let it hang down by the surface. I cannot really say it helped me catch more fish. It does help to see the bait better. The only drawback to the gas is that it can get quite hot so you have to be careful not to burn your self or equipment. I am not sure how bright the battery powered one works.

I used to used lanterns alot to snook fish. I have never heard of them being against the law however i never really paid attention.
As for the lanterns, i have used colemans before and they did alright and they are cheap, i would use two and i would pay attention to any sort of fallen structure or pilings, the snook seems to like to hide in the shadows and ambush bait that would accumulate in the light.
You can use german lanterns which are pricey and touchy but can produce some powerful light but they are pump ones where you have to haul them up every so often and pump them but i think you only use paint thinner for fuel.
But with using a lantern you want to keep an eye out for a sheild to put over it that will reflect all the light down to the bottom, you can use pie pans or garbage can lids and spray the inside of those with a reflective paint. Just cut out a section for the handle and slip it on to the top.
Quite a bit of experience using these, havent in a while cuz all mine broke and now i drive a mustang convert. so there aint a hole lotta room in there for everything i would like to bring with me fishing

Hey. I've been hanging lanterns for years. I now use the coleman propane type with a homemade reflective hood over the top to reflect the light down. Using 5 lanterns, I start out with them spread out hanging just above the water. Gotta keep an eye on the rising tide. It will nuff out a good lantern. Over a period of time when bait is drawn, bring them closer together till they are just spaced enough to fish between them. Leave a couple of lanterns together placed by a piling and watch for snook. This usually creates a good ball of bait. The fish tend to be in the shadows of the light waiting for an ambush. Can't say it always works, but I tend to catch more fish this way.

They make 12volt Speck fishing lights for night fishing with styrofoam floats around them. A lot of fishermen use them during the speckled perch season. Painter

You may be safe up there but down in this area I can not think of a pier that will let you use gas lantern's. It will be listed in the pier rules. It's been like that for years. And as far as the use of them on bridges in this area, they have stopped fishing on all the good bridges and left the crappy one open to fishing.
