Coming up from SE Broward, taking the family to the Orlando parks so I've only got 1 day to fish. I'm planning on fishing the south skyway on Monday, Dec 29th., any advice on how best to maximize the one day? I'd like to target grouper and/or sheepshead, and throw artificials for macks. I've gone thru some of the threads, checked the google aerials so I have a bit of an understanding of the area. Generally, how high is the pier from the water, is it ok to throw throw artificials or do you need to weigh them down?

The Skyway peir is close to the water like the Dania Peir is so you don't need to much weight. Of course a good lure is a Gotcha but a clark spoon works too. For Sheepies try Frozen sand fleas or shrimp. Cast net some greenies or get a sabiki rig.

Black seabass bite is good right now as well. They eat just about anything. Look for structure and you will find them.

Marthas has been closed for awhile but the snook are still there. Don't fish Dania so much, I usually go further north to Anglins pier.

Marthas has been closed for awhile but the snook are still there. Don't fish Dania so much, I usually go further north to Anglins pier. As a kid we snook fished the draw bridge (Dania bch blvd)at night,12 inch mullet or ladyfish,4/0-6/0,80#-100#mono and would still get beat up from the feet up. Was some big fish in them shadows. I remember watchin the cooks at the end of the night feed left overs to the tarpon under the lights from Marthas.Pretty cool stuff. From Deerfeild pier to Hualover pier was home. Many a mile was put under mountain bikes by me and the crew as kids. Alot has changed since then though. neil59... What kind of gear do you have to fish the skyway with?

I'm limited as to how much I could bring since it's a family trip, but I was planning on bringing my avet LX , 30# test, w/ 30-60 8' rod, baitrunner 6500, 20# test, w/ 15-30 8' rod, and a spheros 4000, 15# braid for throwing artificials. I have a pretty good selection to choose from so any suggestions as to what I should switch out would be appreciated.

You should do fine with the gear you mentioned for what you may encounter at the pier. You mentioned grouper/sheepshead. I'm sure you've already seen all the threads on the sheepshead,so that should help you out there. You plan on usin the avet i'm guessin for the grouper. It'll get the job done but i would move up from 30# test.i fish 80# p.p. with 10-20 ft of 100-130# mono on top on a saltist 40h.and have still had my ass handed to me.alot of poepl think this kinda rig is over board but like i said, you'll still get rocked up on those piles. Not sayin this is exactly what you need but it damn sure puts the odds in my corner. Everyone has their own way of grouper fishin out at the piers but this is the most productive way from what i know.
For your grouper freeline any good size baits (6,7,8,9,10 inch) you can catch over the piles.and you can't give'em no slack or its a done deal.Hook your bait behind the anal fin.Make 2 or 3 passes over the pile,if nothin then move to another pile and do the same.Being you only have one day this will probably be your best bet at coverin alot of rocks in a short time.
And you said you have checked out the aerials already.another way for you to know where the piles are is by lookin at the columns under the pier.Every third set is criscrossed.your rocks are in front of those columns.Bein on the skyway isn't any different than bein on a boat, you fish a reef,no luck?,drift on down to the next reef.you'll find fish sooner or later.Hopefully you'll have some tide movin so you can freeline pretty easy.
What ever info you may need someone on here will provide.
