does anyone use pinfish traps to catch bait. if so, what are the pros and cons. i'm thinking about getting one or two. never used them before at the skyway. how often do you check them. what kind of bait do you put in them. any info would be helpful.
thanks, marrio

Pros: Lots of Little Pinfish Cons: Lots of Little Pinfish Bait: Just about anything, the scavengers will gnaw on anything Check them after a few minutes, there will be some in there. If not move it.

We caught 2 and lost 6 grouper. The 2 were about 16". Spent half the time trying to catch bait.

Pinfish traps.... I'm assuming that they are the crab trap looking things that have a narrow slit entrance in them versus the larger holes that the crab traps have. I've seen them at me Wally World and thought that's what they were. Didn't know if that was something that you let sit overnight or what??

i seen scooter load his traps filled with some chum looking stuff and unload them filled with pinners no bigger than 4" or so. good way to get bait but more than 1 trap would be best to keep the bait coming IMO.

My point was that most of the traps have smaller entrances to the cage and the bigger pinfish won't get in ( not like the photo ). When your selling pinfish to the charter guys or baitshops, they don't care what size they are for Snook etc...But, for bigger grouper at the skyway bigger pinfish is better.

I agree, I have two traps and have used them a few times and small Pins and Juvenile Snapper is what I caught.

What size mesh James, my mullet nets have pretty large mesh. May give it a try though.
