Jay aint jokin!!! Trying to hook my bucket that fell in the water, I threw a spoon w/2 oz weight....hooked the rope on the bucket with the spoon...while reeling it in the bucket it filled w/water, making it HEAVY....I was pullin hard, REAL hard....got it about 20 yards from the pier as I was pullin as hard as I could the hook pulled and WHACK!!!! I caught the the sinker in my right eye at about 50mph. Scary stuff. Almost knocked me out. Bloody and swollen, I hauled ass to Lakeland hospital at about 90mph with no depth perception (I was at the pier by myself)....had no vision in the eye for a couple of hours but will make a full recovery. I guess Im lucky in that regard. 3 stiches on my eyelid to boot. Im on bed rest and perscription eye drops for a week. All I could think about when it happened was the story of the guy that died from getting hit in the eye like this. I was really worried that I might lose vision in that eye. Again, Im lucky Ill be fine. Yeah its nasty looking, but trust me, it feels worse...lol...please folks, no sympathy...Im fine, albeit a bit sore, lesson definitely learned. Let it be a lesson for everyone here...if youre snagged and pulling hard trying to free it up or break off, you might wanna turn your back to the water. Welp, Ill be spending my 3 day vacation on the couch...Ill be back out next week with more live reports.

Ok, I gotta ask Steve...was it mono or braid?..my guess is mono. Mono. It didnt break though...the spoon's hook lost its grip on the rope and I caught the recoil.

Yea that mono can stretch though and really whipped back on ya. Always turn my back when pulling hard, even with braid.

You were extremely lucky. Glad to hear you will recover. BTW as you see we both live in or near Lakeland. I've been here since '53 when my mother moved from Mulberry. Hope you are feeling better. Painter

Yeah that was me Jack. Happened about 8:30am, not long after my live report post.
The eye looks pretty good, a little bruised but almost back to normal, but my vision is still pretty blurry...the doc says that will go away gradually...I hope it does otherwise Ill have to get a single contact lens for that eye.
Found out last night that the spoon didnt come out of the rope - the line broke between the lure and the first swivel....
So someone might catch my bucket with a clark spoon attached to the rope. If anyone does, burn that damn bucket please. And take pics so I can see it suffer!!!

Wow thanks for the pics... on the plus side i caught a nice little dip net with my pole this weekend somebody had lost....
And oh my god fishing was GREAT THIS WEEKEND. If you got out friday or saturday im sure you know. Caught about 15 keeper snapper friday nite in about 3 hours and it only took that long cuz i had to go get bait again. Saturday caught 4 more and 4 larger mackeral but the make shift stringer broke and i lost em...Yesterday caught three mackeral and a decent whiting, and saw a guy catch a nice bull red....
Made for some nice eating during the games last nite...What a fun weekend. Once again sorry for your luck man if it makes you feel better i got a $200 dollar speeding ticket friday and a computer virus

ya know what. i was at sand key one time and my vucket fell in the water. actually i just dropped it in without the rope atatched the tide took it with 2 dzn shrimp in it. i took this kids little 3 ft net and caght my big bucket with the net. i had to reach down and grab it . it was like 50 pounds still holding it with 2 arms so i had to let it drain for like 3 minutes. i always doubl e check.
