I have taken "The Bird Training" course and so I am Legal to fish SSP. I take Sr. Citizens, and Disable Veterans out with me to give them a day in the sun. Are they going to be hassled or worse banned from going on the pier, because they can't take the course? I've got to know how many people have been questioned about taking the course since it was implemented 6 months ago? I don't want to take these guys out and have them embarrassed!

There are some interesting statistics on the Misfits site concerning how many warnings were given in the past 3 or 4 months. You might check it out.

Is there a link to that, I checked their site and can't without a Face Book acct. Kinda sucks if you drive all the way there and get kicked off after paying the fee to get on.

Sorry man. Yesterday I could click on the Misfit site and read quite a bit of it without having a facebook acct. Today it won't let me on. Maybe another Skyway Pier Forum member who has a facebook acct. can find that information for you and clue you in.

How could any flunk that test? Are you sure he really took it? They allow you to take it over and over again until you pass. Maybe he thought that he just had to sit through the online class and did not even try to pass???

Now i don't know if it's allowed or legal but why don't you take the course for them. Just fill out the info with theirs and then give them a brief rundown. I did it for my mom and she has the certificate on her phone with her name on it. I just gave her a brief run down of the info just in case. She only knows spanish and they have the course in English.

As long as someone who know their craps... take the course on how to handle the birds is there fishing together.. the other person should not need it... Like having a kid fish with you only the adult need to know.

That test is simple common sense. Most could easily pass the exam without having to watch the course first
For those of you who have taken and passed it (or will), if you are checked at the Skyway, you can quickly prove it by searching on your cell phone email for the word "certificate". The email from FWS stating that you passed the test will show up, along with an image of your certificate. If for some reason you don't carry a cell phone in the pier, print out that image and carry it with you.
Hope this helps,

Do you do this with some sort of official affiliation with the VA or SS? If so, I suggest that you contact the VA or SS Administration and have you obtain authority to take those parties to the Piers acting as their chaperone, and insuring that any pelicans are properly handled. That would be a very reasonable and good thing to be authorized. Otherwise, there's no legal way for them to not have the certificate. It would be like you sitting in the passenger seat and allowing an unlicensed driver to drive the car.

An unlicensed driver to drive the car? that is not a good comparison, a car can be deadly, a bird certificate is a hoop to jump through. Making it too complicated, seems the easy answer is for folk to watch the videos and take the test, you can't fail, can only get the wrong answer until you get the right answer.

This subject has been beat to death already. The skyway anglers have been unfairly singled out by a bunch of Karens. 99 percent of the anglers out there would never intentionally hook a pelican, they're not barbarians. If a tree falls in the woods and nobodys around does it make a sound? If a 39 foot contender runs over a dozen resting pelicans in the trough does anyone even know.

yeah, the pier was just an easy target, clearly there are entanglements but it seems way overblown. In the many times I've been there I rarely see a bird caught. The birds that are found can be from a multitude of other sources, other piers, bridge fisherman, boaters, and just getting caught in line and tackle left behind by some idiot who got wrapped around pilings or mangroves. But all the blame laid upon the skyway pier folk, easy target that is governed by an agency that they can get their hands around. Hard to go after the other causes. Oh well, just play the game, jump through the hoop, and fish.
Did see the bird rescue person there last time I went, I hope they are keeping records on the lack of entangled birds, perhaps the data will show that the problem is not as bad as it was made out to be and they will back off the requirements in the near future.

Not a problem with the test. Tackle restrictions was the biggest kick in the butt.

Don't the tackle restrictions end today? Personally I would like a permanent ban on sabiki rigs statewide.... buy a castnet. You don't even need to cast it..spin and drop method will get all the bait needed

I have been wondering if all the spoon slingers for macs have replaced the treble hook with a single hook? Personally I don't care. Stuckintherocks posted a few days ago that he realized that the pompano jig he was using wasn't legal. I knew which one he was talking about. Two hooks on it. I thought it all ended at the end of March. Not sure. I know the bomber I was throwing for ladyfish didn't cut it. Live to tell about it. Only saw two pelicans in 5 hours and neither one stopped by to say hello. See Ya.

Just to clear that up, almost all spoon slingers are using single hook spoons

I was using a single hook from a sabiki to catch bait and had a bucket full, including numerous pinfish, in no time. The bomber I was using went back in the tackle box after I realized what I was doing. Obviously the single hooks on the spoons aren't much of a negative as quite a few have posted they are slaying the macks. One guy claims to have caught 50 in one morning. The fish I'm looking for require a #12 or #14 circle hook. Let the good times roll.
