Well for the past couple months I was able to finally find my local redfish and have been having a blast catching those.. but the other night my spot was loaded with hardhead catfish which only means one thing… winter is over and back to skyway I go.
started out on ssp at 7am, down by the end. Place was so thick with fog could barely see 2 feet infront of my face.. Saw guys catching small Mack’s at the very end but stayed further up on the pier with a little more shoulder room..
After an hour or so with no bites and no activity I started moving around. Worked my way to the entrance of south pier.. still no bites. Was throwing glass minnow jigs, crappie jigs, pompano jigs. Worked my way off the ssp and onto the flats leading up to the pier and caught a small redfish on live shrimp. Released and spent the late morning/early afternoon working live shrimp at all the little spots between ssp and nsp entrances. Caught a few small sheepshead, a small bonnethead, and a lot of pigfish.
Around 3pm I worked my way back to nsp, tide was going out and I stopped about half way down the pier, threw a weighted spoon rig, whacked first cast by a nice Mac.. second cast.. whacked.. from there on it was nonstop mack action, but only on the weighted spoon rig as the mackerel were low in the water column, basically on bottom.
Threw back most of the smaller ones and any one that didn’t get too destroyed by the spoon and still left with an easy limit.
They say don’t leave fish to find fish but at one point I was catching fish in the 17-18in range every cast.. left away from the crowd and moved further down and worked spoon out far on bottom
and caught a few larger macks in the 20-22 in range.
They were tough to find but when they finally showed up they were quality fish.
no signs of pompano
also didn’t have any luck in therocks for snapper/sheepshead/grunts
