The water temp is slowly starting to warm up. Are the King guys out there on the NSP doing their thing?
As soon as they start catching their kings, I’ll start fishing for my macs. Hopefully this year, the red tide won’t be so bad like last spring.

Not to rain on anyone's parade but there is significant wait until the kings show up, they are likely down by the Keys and little north of there right now. I understand they stay away from temperatures about 68 F and below, we currently have like 62 F and many cold nights still in the near term forecast. I'm jonesing for some mackerel action too and look forward to things warming up but don't expect them for a while.

My friends were down in the keys this weekend lobstering and they said it was so cold. They had to wear wet suits. Only got 4 keepers and toss back a lot of 3”.
You’re absolutely right, unless we get some really warm weather consistently these next few weeks, we won’t see the Mac’s till late feb, early March.
I remember 2018ish, I caught the Mac’s as early as mid feb due to warmer weather.

Very right ... around 68F is the scientifically understood critical temperature for king and Spanish mackerel. It is a little more complex than that, but a good way to roughly predict their possible arrival to our area is to look at the sea surface temperature (SST images on the Internet. When you see the 67-68 color reach here to the bay, but not just out in the offshore Gulf, there's a reasonable chance that both king and Spanish might be available in numbers. Some years, the warmer water is offshore before coastal and bay waters warm up, and the bulk of the kings and maybe many of the Spanish bypass our area on the their annual migratiom to their summerfeeding grounds in the northern Gulf.

I suspect macks will be caught at the piers today, warm weather and an approaching front makes me suspicious

Yeah captain, it's time to slide on out there and do some damage. If you get on some macks and post it on this forum there will be 500 spoon slinging maniacs out there the following day....lol

Yeah...10-4 I've been fishing on it since 1999. And seen pretty much all you could see.
The last 5 years have been very disappointing. Between the bird people and the absolute rudest MF'ers in the world out there. Blast music, drinking beers, smoking weed, and not following the rules and laws.
I have pretty much moved on from all the idiots out there. Over 30 years fishing Florida waters from the Keys to Apalachicola.
I can only tolerate so much stupidity, so I can fish the piers only so often.
My heart is sad 😔 but I'm told it is called progress. I miss the 80's and 90's fishing. It was almost always fantastic fishing. Today's fishing is a different beast. I could go to the pier in 2003 and in 2 hours catch 50 plus Mack's and a few Kings fish 🐟. I miss those days.
Good luck to everyone... Tight lines

It’s still to cold for me. I don’t have to many days off so I’m going to wait till the end of this month. I see some tides I like on the 28-29.

It could be 1st week in March before we get enough heat to warm the water to high 60's... Kind of day by day right now. I will hold off for a bit.
But I'm getting ready 😉😇🤓

Saw atleast 3 different pictures of people catching small macks in SRQ bay this past week before today rain/cold front hit.... makes me think that on the next extended warmup. They will be slightly more thick
