Seems fishermen on the skyway really loaded up their coolers during the long gag season. 106,000 pounds in 6 weeks!! Seriously?? How can anyone think they can put that kind of bullcrap information out there and expect the public to accept it. Might be lucky to have any season at all this year.

If I'm not mistaken, that's just over one ton per day. Wow ! Wouldn't that something. Pretty sure I had a couple on last year, but got rocked up and broke off. My success, or lack of it, didn't add to that daily total. Wondering how that number could be verified in the first place and secondly, where did this info come from? Not done trying. Have named my new rod, the MEAT STICK. Fresh Grouper fingers in 2024. First things first though, I need to get off this couch. Ha.

GAG GROUPER UPDATE
The preliminary gag grouper catch estimates for our 49 day, 2023 season have published.
All I can say is that I do not believe them to be accurate and I will do everything I can to keep us from being penalized for fish I do not believe we caught. There is plenty more I would like to say right now but, for now, suffice it to say the recreational catch estimating process is in dire need of an overhaul and Im doing everything possible at the moment to point that out.
MRIP-FES 2023 total gag catch estimate: 1,677,591 lbs.
• Private: 1,399,513 lbs gw, 42% PSE • Charter:162,832 lbs gw, 33% PSE • Shore:106,602 lbs gw, 98% PSE • 1% of landings from Headboat (8,644 lbs gw)
State of Florida Reef Fish Survey (SRFS) Private Angler Gag catch estimate: 240,000 lbs. (charter catch would be added to this for a comparable total - dont have that number but I think its 175,000 or so.)
Yes, our two best catch estimates are 7X, and over a million pounds, apart. (again) Yes, "shore landings" for gag are indicated as ten times that of headboats. Yes, 2023 shore landings are based on a single intercept on the Skyway Bridge. In 2022 there were none so shore catch listed as zero that year. Yes, the MRIP data indicates that in the 19 days open in October, (at least 4 were unfishable due to weather) we caught around 750,000 lbs of gag.... Yes, thats more than the entire commercial fleet catches all year for the past 5 years.

Thank you tears, Those numbers include the entire gulf of Mexico, which would explain the large numbers, Where can I go to catch keeper Red Grouper from shore?

Thank you tears, Those numbers include the entire gulf of Mexico, which would explain the large numbers, Where can I go to catch keeper Red Grouper from shore? I think it was the gag keeper grouper from shore that people are complaining about. It is way more than 10x headboat landing. I don't know about you but to think there are more gag grouper being landed from shore than headboat is kind of crazy... more than 10x... Noticed that the number haven't count TX yet as well. I think for Red grouper they haven't count in LA.

This is just one reason why there is such a huge disagreement between the feds and state fisheries management agencies. There is no way a sample size of 1 intercept for land based landings is statistically valid Alabama is in a similar fight with red snapper landing estimates. The state system is way more accurate than the feds overestimates. Fortunately the states seem to be gradually winning the battle to use their better estimates.

Obviously those that worked up the numbers/estimates weren't doing their jobs. Just how many gags need to be accounted for before they're not considered "overfished" and regulations relaxed. They proclaimed goliath grouper endangered more than 30 years ago and according to them they still are. They're harder on the oceans than any recreational angler with the imbalances they create.

According to a recent meeting the council has decided to not allow a 28 day 2024 season due to the overages in harvests during the 2023 season. Evidently this isn't a final decision but this ain't looking good.

The best gag shore fisherman I know put 68 legal gags in the ice chest for 2023 season. 90% from the skyway. 10% from the manatee river.
