Yes, another big negative trip for me, caught 3 small runners, no macks, no jacks, no hacks, no cracks, but what really pizzed me off was when I noticed they are installing lights under the entire bridge

The lights are for the dolphins to help with night feeding. What a waste of money.

An absolute waste of money, speaking of dolphins I never saw any while I was there...that's a sure sign the macks aren't there

I was out there this past Sun, a guy I talked to said they were crushing the macks on the gulf pier at Ft. Desoto last week on spoons, said they wouldn't hit bait. Another sign of how wacky those dang macks are. I suspect there are lots of macks somewhere in the bay, but they are not around the pier in enough numbers to make it fun

Can't help with the migration question, but I have caught them as late as Dec 20th some years There are many factors involved, and even the best science can't always predict fish migration, for species like Spanish mackerel. Weather, particularly wind direction, strength, and duration has strong effects. Then there are biological factors, like movements of their prey species that the macks will follow. There are other factors like current patterns and water clarity that are secondary effects of winds and weather. However, there is one overriding factor -- water temperature. Look for most mackerel to migrate out of the bay and local nearshore waters once the water temperature falls below 68 deg F. A few fish might get "lost" and remain around, but the majority will move south when the waters get colder. Water temperature is easy to follow by looking at the NOAA Tides and Currents site on TV he Internet.

Can't prove it but I suspect wind direction and speed is the culprit. This time of year I've slayed macks when we get NW winds that bring in cold fronts, we're not getting those now, almost all wind has been consistanly NE and strong at times and will continue, I don't see any change yet. Water temp around Destin is 72 today....macks are probably still there

I question the accuracy of the water temps our weather people give us, I believe they are just using yearly averages. Where in the bay is the weather bouy located?

Maybe you are talking about those many fishing, tides, and weather apps online. I too question their information. However, there no reason to not trust the NOAA site. Yes, dump those crappy apps, but NOAA gives nothing but real, verified, accurate information. NOAA does clearly tell where their data recorders are located.

Temperature is key indicator but just what temperature is being reported? Likely surface water temperature but deeper in the water column could be very different. Just something to consider as getting closer to the supposed critical temperature for mackerels to move on as deeper water may have hit that temp sooner.

Well if they have moved on I give them a big fat F for lack of participation. The short run that we had was mostly small fish and was not worthwhile for me. Can't blame it on lack of baitfish, the bay is full of new hatch scaled sardines

Wondering what's next on the agenda for Winter fishing at the piers? I know a bunch of fisherman were waiting for the Mackeral run. Pompano off the beach was a kick for myself last Winter. Water temps need to cool just a bit I think.

I haven't given up on macks yet and if that dang pier was open I would have been there today to fish this unsettled weather, best mack conditions so far this fall. Problem with this weather is it stopped all the road work out there, so I doubt they will finished this week

Good luck and hopefully next year it's better
