I have fished the Chesapeake Bay and Outer Banks all my life. I live in North Carolina. Just recently went to Skyway South Oct 22-26. Loved it. Caught a bunch of macks. I plan to make Skyway a regular fishing spot. My fishing equipment is getting old and I am looking for recommendations for new rod and reel. Currently looking at Penn Battle III, Daiwa BG and Shimono Nasci but I'm not sure what size. Looking for durability, casting distance and smooth. Thanks in advance for any help.

I use 4000 or 6000 series spinning reels. 7-8' medium to MH rods.

My 4000 bg has beeen thru hell and back and still truckin along. I have used and abused the reel for 2 years now with no maintenance. Caught everything from Mack’s to jacks to redfish snook black drum… only fish to ever get away because of the reel was a 30+lb Jack that just couldn’t be stopped

For someone new to pier fishing I suggest an 8ft heavy, fast action Shimano Teramar with Daiwa BG 4500 and 40lb power pro. Keep in mind you will be lifting fish 8-10 feet and wimpy rods won't cut it
