Who wants to wager with me that there are more sabikis sold in this area than any other area in Florida? Heck, I usually keep a dozen on hand myself. New pier rules gonna put a hurtin on those sales.....lol

Yes, the sabiki ban is probably the worst part of the new pier regulations. The thing that got me was that at last Commission meeting where r new rules were being discussed, the Commission staffers were totally clueless about what sabikis are. The fact of the matter is for most of us a sabiki is used to catch bait fish. The hooks are #6 or #8 in US size. The mainline is around 12 s# (heavier than needed), and the branch line (the little length of line that is a dropper from the mainline is usually something like 8#. There are many non-expert fishermen who use very different sabiki rigs...the mainline is like 25#, and the branch line is like 15# or 20#, and the 5 or 6 hooks can be from ## 4 to 1/0. The latter large sabikis a major problem for pelicans, and there is no justification for fishing with them just to catch pinfish or small grunts, etc. A double hook dropper is more than adequate for that, and far less dangerous to pelicans.
Here is a far-out idea -- but I think it would work...but it is too late now for the next two years. The bait shop could have special sabiki bait rigs available for purchase. They would have very small (#10 or smaller hooks that are made of very thin weak steel), the main line would be only something like 2 ft long, and only 6 or 4#. The branch lines would be 4# or maybe 2 or 3# and thus easy for a pelican to break if snagged on a mangrove roost. Such rigs would still allow fishermen to catch baitfish like white bait, greenies and Spanish sardines. They might be just a little less effective that presently used sabiki bait rigs, but would present very little danger to pelicans (especially compared to the large ones described above).
And here is the kicker that could seal the deal. Those rigs would be available for sale at the Skyway tackle shops, with all the profits going to......................wait for it..........................................................................................................................................................................
The pelican conservation groups...with the profits being available for their conservation efforts.
Little far out...or is it...at least worth thinking about...in two years. At least it would allow us fishermen to catch a few live baits without having to buy a big heavy cast net and throw it just to swim out a livey on our second allowed rod.

You know flatsrunner, for FWC to outlaw them on a specific pier and not all piers to me seems questionable

Here's another wager for you knuckleheads...I will bet an unopened x-rap magnum that more fish are caught on the piers with sabikis than any other rig. Of course I will have no takers because you know I'm right

I thought at one time there was a map posted of the area where Sabikis would be banned, from the last bathroom to end of the pier. Is that off the table? Also how about catching bait on the bridges before we get on the pier?

No more sabiki bait rigs for you, me, or anyone, anywhere on the piers...at least for two years. And it will only change then if we make a strong reasonable case for a change between then and now.

I was just told that it may be an On-Line Class. No Idea if any costs will be charged. So far, Cast Nets can be tossed Anywhere for now, as that hasn’t changed. Sabikis, No Idea as of now.

My FWC Officer Emailed Me this: myfwc.com/news/all-news/skyway-rules/Starting Oct. 1, 2023, the following changes will be in effect: 1. Anglers must have proof of completing the annual education requirement. 2. The use of the following gear from Nov. 15 – March 15 each year is prohibited: 3. Fishing rigs with more than one hook attached (e.g., sabiki rig, chicken rig, topwater plug). 4. Any multiple hook (e.g., treble hook). 5. Anglers are limited to use of no more than two sets of hook-and-line fishing gear (e.g., rods or handlines). He also said that it may change after a 2-year study period.

Wire cutter to all of the small gold hooks except for the top one, leave on all the fishskin teasers, and catch your green backs one at a time. If you hook more than three at a time they tangle your sabiki to hell anyways

I catch alot of bait fish with this...ask Mackerelman.

If you hook more than three at a time they tangle your sabiki to hell anyways That might work, but it will make it much harder to catch a bait...probably about 5 or 6 times harder (take that much time longer) because you have !/5 or 1/6 as many chances (hooks, compared to a rig with 5 or 6 hooks). I think that I rarely catch a bait on the top hook, so maybe it would be better to leave a middle hook intact and cut all the others. That way you have all those other cut hooks dancing around your one intact hook to attract the baitfish to it. It would be good for someone to test all this out and report if it works well enough to be practical.

I also usually shorten my sabiki, never to one hook, but usually to 3. I would probably keep the second or third hook down and then keep on all the teasers, for me personally I don’t think it’s going to take much longer for me to get baits, I usually only get them one or two at a time anyways. Plus a sabiki with one hook is way more mobile and can be reused multiple times. Tiny bit of squid or shrimp and it should guarantee one bait per drop. Ill be out there Monday night and will test it.

If you hook more than three at a time they tangle your sabiki to hell anyways The only reason you get tangled with multiple baits hooked....is because you don't have enough weight on sabiki to keep baits from pulling.. swimming up. Go to a heavier weight and you will not have that problem.
