Stuckintherocks seems to think I should night fish for the sea monsters I'm looking for. Recommends ladyfish for bait. Sounds good to me. I always pefer fishing around a high tide and scanning the Tides for Fishing website, can't come up with a decent high tide in the middle of the night without a strong tidal coefficient. Also considering a 2 or 4 tide day. Don't want a strong tide for freelining ladies. Should I not be so concerned about the high tide in the middle of the night? I don't want to wait a month to try this. Any suggestions? Have never night fished the piers before.

Don't know....but if you freeline a ladyfish around those piers you better have some strong tackle. If you hook a big goliath grouper and manage to get it to the surface will you go down on a rope to remove the hook or just cut the line? Tarpon or shark will present the same scenario

Obviously the heavy gear is a must, I use a 10500 penn spinfisher, 80lb braid to 100lb mono topshot. Wire leader if going after shark. The trick to releasing is pinch down the barbs on your circle hooks, 9 out of 10 tarpon aren’t going to get hooked anyway. For releasing any biggin that you do manage to get to the pier, tighten drag, and lift as if you are going to pier flip the 200lb beast, but when the head comes out just let them shake their head while holding solid tension and another 9 out 10 times they will pop right off. I do harvest legal black tips on occasion so I have a big strong drop net for that. Also if I’m fishing solely for monsters I’m usually only fishing at the beginning of the pier and only a short walk away from getting them on the rocks. Don’t think just because you are in slightly more shallow water that there are no monsters around. As for the tides, for what you are trying to do I wouldn’t worry about them as much, when it comes to fishing like that I have no tidal preferences and have hooked big fish during high tide, low tide, incoming, outgoing, etc.. you’re fishing with luck, a good tide is just a bonus.

That's a bunch of helpful info there. I have 65lb braid to 80 mono. Also a pretty heavy duty drop net. Big enough to pull up a 40 inch cobia. My nephew cant wait to go and try. He's 25 years younger than I am. Maybe I'll lower him down on a rope to release any giants. I'll have to run that by him first . Would make a great video. Going to take another look at the tide tables and set a date. Thanks. Will post results, good or bad.

Not doing that either, Jay once told me there are 9 goliaths living under the baitshop and it was almost impossible to get a big snapper or gag past them, they take it all

That’s awesome, as much as I love targeting specific species and all the finesse that’s involved in doing so, I grew up fishing with my pops and he was always a bait and wait kinda guy, throw a big something on the bottom and just wait for a bite, you never know what you are going to hook. That style fishing is still exciting to me and holds near and dear to my heart even if it is frowned upon by some. I think if you guys can get your hands on some lady fish or silver trout you’re in for a fun night.

But I’ve also never fished under the bait shop next to the 9 goliaths

Two Cobia I saw caught were caught by my wife in 6 feet of water off a seawall on Charlotte Harbor. 4 inch chunk of ladyfish on the bottom for both. One undersized and the other just made the minimum. The only other I saw caught was hooked by this Dude off the Placida pier in about 6 feet of water. Caught with a sardine that come frozen from Walmart. Might start at the beginning of the pier and work our way out. A few weeks ago on the South Pier we went to within 50 yards of the end and that's where we stayed. Here's hoping.

That is awesome stuff as well, if I were givin a choice right now that I could only fish with one bait for the rest of my life it would be cut ladyfish. I’ve caught everything from sharks to jacks to snook to redfish and trout on cut lady’s. I got a 26in trout on a chunk of ladyfish that was out as a shark bait. Hunk was so big I don’t even know why the trout thought it could eat it. My buddy caught a 38in snook on a ladyfish head that he threw out as a joke. 30lb braid straight to a circle hook, no leader at all. If I told you how I caught my cobia you wouldn’t even believe it.

Damn I'm glad I found this board. I gave up all social media a couple months ago and this stuff right here is solid gold reading! Haha!
I'll be lurking around for sure. Love all the info and fish tales. Reminds me of being a young boy hanging with my pops and his buddies.
