Got the wind knocked out of my sails at the South Pier today. Had a handful of pins in the bucket and some greenback chum when the tide turned out. One small grouper caught by my wife. That was it in 5 hours. Launch out a pin and get a bite from a 300 pound fish. Flipper. Launch out another. Flipper. Throw out some chum for mangoes. Wait a few minutes and cast into the chummed area. Nothing. Those rotten Dolphins got that figured out. I see on another post that SkyJay says to fish at night from May to Sept. Wondering if maybe that isn't the way to go.

Night fishing is definitely the way to go in this heat. One tip on fishing the pier, set yourself up so you can stay mobile, move around to different spots til you find some snappers. Download google earth and locate all the rockpiles, they start at piling #70. Another tip, don't go there on Fri/Sat night and try to fish...it's a circus

I fished all night Monday night and it made no difference with flipper.. he stole so many of my baits I thought he would just get full and leave me alone for a while… he did not get full..

FWC should consider opening a season on Dolphins to benefit fisherman. I think they are good eating, at least blended with Tuna. I don't know what it would take to hook one. You would think a big circle hook would do the job, but not so. Probably be a great fight. Might have to harpoon it at the pier if he didn't take all the line off the reel first. Just saying.

Wonder what they taste like??? LOL That would be a sure way to get the pier shut down.
Charter captain out of Pensacola or Orange Beach got pissed off and shot two of them about 10-15 years ago. While he had passengers onboard. They called the law as soon as they hit the shore. He went to jail, lost his license and his boat.

I see no chance of hooking one, you might snag one.

They manage to get by all the hooks on a kingfish rig with stinger hooks, way too smart.

Use cut bait, ladyfish, mullet, big threadfins, mackerel if you're brave

I've only ever seen one get the hook when eating a Mac at the Ookaloosa Island pier. Made a gawd awe full squealing sound as it headed south and spoiled the dude.

My post was about what to use to avoid the dolphins, not how to hook them

I see no chance of hooking one, you might snag one. I had hooked one or two before at skyway. It is always the baby. The mother is basically teaching the baby how to steal the bait off the hook without getting hook.

I have also accidentally hooked a smaller one, I have a video of it on my phone but no way to post videos here, it swam straight up to the pier and just waited for me to cut the line..

I recall a story told to me by 3 people about a guy that got so pi..ed off with those dolphins he went to his truck, grabbed his AR-15, and started shooting them. I was never able to verify it so it could be SSP lore

Tags are 50 bucks each. One per year, per person. 60 inches minimum to the fork. Must be dispatched upon landing. Must be kept whole until processed. Catch must be reported to FWC within 24 hours. No Sabicki rigs are to be used at any time during harvest.

The Marine Mammal Protection Act prohibits feeding and harassing marine animals, I would think flipper falls under that category.

I guess quite a few of us are guilty for feeding flipper, although not by choice. I would never consider harming Flipper. Why, he's darned near a pet. I tell him to get the heck out of here, but he's disobedient. The Dolphins here where I live like to hang around fisherman in hopes of snatching their catch while reeling it in, but at the Skyway it seems they have figured out to just not wait and go for the bait. A few years ago near Boca Grande Pass I watched a Dolphin shoot full speed up onto a flat maybe 4 feet deep and grab what I estimated to be about a 28 inch snook, flip it up into the air and eat the thing. I figured maybe a mullet or smaller fish, but a fish of that size I couldn't believe. Imagine what the fish on the rockpiles are doing when they see a Dolphin consistently hanging around. Just another challenge at the Piers.

The fish on the rockpiles meaning gags? Season opens Sept. 1st, why fish for something you can't keep, fish cut bait for snappers and just ride out the summer, we may have a fishing explosion this fall

That's what I want to see, is a fishing explosion. Is that where you fish with dynamite?

Yes! Grab me a couple boxes......I've seen it before, we have some down years then BOOM, it's lights out fishing on the piers, 2017-2019 was epic, then it faded, it's coming again. Around 9:15 I will light up the neighborhood with the best mortars I could find, just make everyone run and hide... wimps
