I decided to buy a penn 6000 combo w/ 9’ rod for spooning macs. It’s quite long for me but the price was good at $70. Do you prefer mono or braid and what lb test.

good price, 20 or 25 mono might stand up better out at the piers , more forgiving against the rocks but braid would work surf fishing and give you some more casting distance. plenty of people on this forum are more experienced than me on that subject.

Braid works better. You can cast further and braid doesn’t stretch, which allows the spoon to move as it’s supposed to.

I decided to go half 20lb mono to fill up the spool and finish it with 20lb braid.
I’ll use 40lb leader but does anyone recommend 50lb?
Thank you for all the feedback and advice.
I got the combo from Bass Pro Shop.

I use 40 or 50# mono for my leaders, just depends on which spool I grab.

I use 40 or 50# mono for my leaders, just depends on which spool I grab. I have always free line and spoon with 40lb. A friend mention I might get less hits off 50lb, so I just stuck with 40. Wasn’t sure if that is just a myth.

Depends on spooning. Spoons alone....light braid( 15-20) Sinker/spoon rig...heavy braid 30-65) Fishing the heavy braid makes it easier on your fingers casting heavy sinkers all day. Just depends on what you are doing. I run 2 ...9ft rods...one with Shimano Saragosa 6000 with 30 braid for distance..... the other a Van Staal VS200 with 50 braid for heavy sinkers/spoons.

Thanks for the advice. I’m going to test it out this week during the afternoon outgoing tide. Hopefully the red tide isn’t too severe this week.
