Started the morning with a walk north on st Pete beach until we reached the rocks and inlet. There were several guys pitching goofy jigs my wife and I included with zero fish witnessed caught. There were however several large sheepshead caught while we were there. On the jetty I saw a few landed as well as in the channel along the rocks just off shore. My wife missed two bites from fish approximately 16-18” long in packs of three fighting for her jig in the deeper rocks just off the jetty she said. I assumed they may be snook?? Seeing as we weren’t set up for live bait fishing we headed north for pier 60 to see if we could find any takers of our pompano jigs. I should have taken it as a sign to come that there were no local experienced fisherman as far as I could tell. At the most 5-6 kids and an adult or two just catching pin fish. They may have seen sheepshead and were pitching there shrimp to the pilings but all I saw was pinfished caught. We lost several jigs here! I did manage 2 hook ups. The first was a large 17” maybe silver fish. My eye said trout but it could have been a mackerel, I set the hook. Saw it flash and it got off. The second was most definitely a smaller sea trout 12 maybe that popped off just as I was going to bring it up. All in all an informative but struggle of a day. Tomorrow should be interesting as we booked an 8hour party boat fishing trip out of tarpon springs with 15mph winds predicted. I am bound and determined to get my wife on her first saltwater fish!!
