Thanks for sharing your report! Just FYI, I'm sure it wasn't intentional, but it looks like you have some baby king mackerel mixed with your Spanish mackerel. The juvenile kings look almost identical to Spanish, but the lateral line drop is a dead giveaway. I'm sure it was an honest mistake.

I truly had no idea… I’m sorry but can you explain a little more on ways to identify the difference ?! Now I’m terrified to keep any mackerel I catch !

Not just 1 baby king but almost half of your catch is baby king... Might want to delete picture. Here's how you tell them apart... baby king- 1) They don't spot moving after you land them. 2) Spots are faded color and round. 3) The top fin is grayish color. 4) The lateral line drop faster than mack. mack- 1) They stop moving after you land them. 2) spot are usually more bright yellow and oval not circle. 3) Top fin is black. 4) lateral line have a gaderal drop. Look at bottom picture. fishingbooker.com/blog/king-mackerel-vs-spanish-mackerel/

did not meant to scare him away... pretty sure a lot of people 99% of people mistake baby kingfish for mack. I probably have done it in my life as well. ooo well he was a very good guy.

I doubt they can even go after him based on picture posted, no way to prove those were really his fish, could have been picture of someone else's catch he was taking credit for, I think you have to be busted red handed.

My comment was purely meant to be educational, not accusatory. I didn't know the difference between Spanish and baby kings until I was taught by someone else. Hopefully he will feel comfortable posting here again some day.

First time poster on this site. Wish I could have seen his catch. It was a harmless infraction but could have been a costly one. Now that I am on this site I will provide my fishing trips in great detail. I have caught many nice fish from the SSP. I typically don’t have much luck when the poles are rattling from the wind.. lol. I have meet Mackerel Man and hopefully meet others. Love the post and valid info you all share!
