Hello all. New here from Sarasota. Went to SSP last week and went to bait shop. In the shrimp tank were several nice live shrimp. I was told by operator that they were caught there. Does any one have any info on catching them. Squid jig size make tides or moon phase on way they are caught ? Thanks Wolf

Live squid? They are very few places that’s can sell them consistently. I have never used live squid, but if you’re going to use them, you might get some good luck with Anita or Copia in the early morning or evening time.

Seen them caught at the SSP middle of the day with squid jigs, I would think they would bite better at night under a light.

Here we go again, because things are slow we're talking about eating bait. I have eaten pin fish in the past.

Squid aren't bad but they aren't all that good either. Definitely need to be cleaned all the way with skin removed.
Nighttime as the tide slows down is usually the best. Squid jigs or a small treble with a piece of bait is usually best. Normally can see them in the sady areas on the appro

I met this Asian guy a few months ago and he had caught a very impressive amount of squid using Yozuri lures at the NSP at night. He told me to tie a 1-2 ounce egg weight on the bottom with light leader in case it gets caught and you’ll only lose the weight instead of the expensive $8 lures. I don’t know what the name is the knot setup but it reminds me of the pompano jig for surf fishing. I had bought 3 of these lures in different color but have not yet used them. I keep them on me just in case I see that squid master again so he can teach me his technique. As for shrimp, i have scoop up jumbo sized shrimp at night on outgoing tide along with crabs. I should try to fish with them. Any suggestions?? One night, I caught about 2 dozen. Nothing but shrimp floating by.

No. It was about 3 weeks ago. You can still catch crab on the outgoing tide. But for shrimp, I’d probably go wading in the bed of sea grass at night this week.

Cheap little 4' cast net in the lights on slack tide works great too. Easy peasy. My kids have filled the freezer using thus method. Chum helps. Any kind of cut up bait. We save the heads for offshore Jig head tipping and filet the bodies for consumption.

He also was catching them on slack tide as I was waiting for the tide to pick up going out.

Forgot to mention... Also a great way to hone your young'ns cast netting skills and keep them in the game and entertained. No fancy equipment needed. Justa cheap a 4 er Will do. As the kid grows, the net grows. As does the bond between you. Best cast netter I know is my daughter. She started out on a 4' k mart net years and years ago. Before the internet. And Crazy World. On the Skyway. And she thought,we were only fishing.

A little piece of shrimp on a small treble is great when you find them. Any bait works but shrimp seems to be consistent everywhere
