Ive never had much luck with shrimp unless I toss it out towards the rocks. Even then it doesnt last long. Right off the pier and its gone almost instantly.

I always stop at Oneils and grab 5 dz. Only 10 bucks. Been catchin nice mangos off the rocks with them. Switch between halves and wholes to see what the bigger ones like. Use a smaller hook and get your reflexes ready. They wont last long.

i use shrimp alot.
When Fished near or on the bottom. yes the pins tear them up, but so do the snapper. and sheepies Trick is to keep the shrimp moving but lifting your rod tip a little. If the Pins are tearing them one option is to move. Sometimes just moving @ 10 feet can make all the difference
Another option is to use a float with the bait suspended off the bottom. Trout and Mackes will hit a shrimp preseted this way.
Finally, I Like to tip a Doc Goffy Jig with a shrimp and bounce the jig off the bottom for some Pomps.
I guess I am saying there are different ways to fish a shrimp and if the pins are eating your bait move or present the shrimp differently
