How do the piers normally look during opening week of grouper season? More cars than usual?

Busier than usual but opening day is a Monday so you have a couple days before they get hammered. Keep in mind that you don't have to be fishing the rock piles to catch a grouper.

I've caught a few keepers under the bridge. They hunker down in the middle back in behind the crooked pilings that line up with the piles during high sun in the shade. Big ole chunks of cut Ladyfish, or a mangled Blue Runner or Grunt on bottom works well especially during hard currents. Fish the little eddys in behind the crooked pilings.

with all the hoopla that gets made about freelining pinfish, never underestimate the power of a big ole juicy cut bait for Gags.

this guy ate a tiny dead Jack Crevalle impailed on double 7/0's on a 3 ounce knocker rig and 60 lb Pink Yozurri. Score the sides of the baitfish a few times with a knife to let the juice and scent out. You want to attract a bunch of piscators and get em peckin at the bait. Mr Grouper cant stand that Shizit, and his greed will overcome him.

i open one eye of a 7/0 Mustad Bronze Multi purpose beak hook with wire cutters... just place the tip of the cutters in the eye of the hook where the end touches the shank and squeeze to open the eye a little, just enough to allow the barb of hook 2 to pass through. Line the hooks up facing in the same direction. squeeze the eye back tight as to not allow hook 2 to fall out. ( sharpen well first with small file as its alot easier before you chain them together) hold baitfish in left hand and eye up wher the bottom hook should be placed in order for top hook to end up in the center of the meaty portion just before the tail with head facing down. Impale at this point aprox half to 3/4 way down behind the head. Next turn baitfish to allow top hook to be inserted with top hook evenly with bottom hook. You must get it straight or bait will helicopter and spin up youre leader into a knot. Same for a strip bait or sardine. In heavier current snipping the tail off just behind the top hook will also cut down on spin. sounds complicated buts its not and becomes second nature after a few tries. The benefits are a more natural presentation one and a stronger more reliable connection to your hooked up Grouper or Snapper. One of the oldest commercial fishing tricks in the books. Works well in numerous situations for a multitude of species both inshore and off. Brace yourselves the fish police will be here any minute. lol
*Edit- This will only work with old school metal hooks. The black carbon newer hooks are to brittle and snap when you try to bend them. Broned steel is best.

m.youtube.com/watch?v=lCnnn26f86Eheres a video on chaining hooks. diferent style hook than i prefer but the rigging is the same. I prefer this method to the double snell. Much stronger, and the hooks dont cost a fortune. Ive lost too many nice fish on the double snell, popularized by Hubbards Marina when the leader pops on the bottom hook.😐
