Has anyone caught a legal red from the pier? Is it possible to target them since gags are closed? I've seen & caught some in the 16-18" range but don't know of anyone catching a legal one. I'm assuming use the same tactics as gags but wonder if this would be like hunting bigfoot. Any thoughts on this?

It would be like hunting bigfoot...
Heard some was caught in the shipping channel on the boat.

seen a few "keepers" leave the bridge back in the day when the piers first opened for business and before on the very end of the North Pier. But the limit then was 18 inches so who knows. Not very likely though. Hard to find Keepers offshore let alone in the Bay. And get this- The Comercial size limit is still 18 inches. anything smaller gets cut up for bait๐๐๐ now... dont that just grind yer phukin geers๐ก

Caught a beauty of an 18" red in SIGHT of the skyway over Thanksgiving. I see a lot of legal gags in the youtube videos from that area but not a lot of legal reds. Seems like the bigger reds like deep water, whereas the gags don't care.

I've caught an 18 inch red from the south pier before. I was fishing at night on the rock piles for snapper and when I looked down before flipping him over the edge I thought I had a monster snapper. I've caught plenty of hand sized red grouper but never a keeper nor I have seen one. I bet it happens occasionally. Speaking of rare catches I seen a pic of a girl at the skyway who caught a monster hogfish. Talk about jackpot, I wish hogs were common inshore.

My first ever caught hogfish was 19 inches and caught on the north pier, by accident..Small strip of squid and that was about 10 years ago.
