Are there still pompano being caught on the beaches this time of year? I have been getting nice size Pomps off the beach close to John's Pass for the past 4 weeks. Wade out and then cast almost to the first sand bar. They cruise that first cut inside the sand bar, especially around high tide.

Ever had any luck farther north? Like honeymoon island pass? I’ve tried for a couple days with no luck using teaser/jig combo and shrimp on a pompano rig. Seems that the conditions are fairly similar to the passes farther south but they don’t seem to be there. Or I’m just not doing it right.

I have Fished the Dunedin Causeway for Pompano & You can find them along the Seawalls. Especially by the Last Bridge on the Right Side before You go onto Honeymoon Island. Both Bridges has them swimming around there.
Use a Pompano Jig.

The doc goofy jigs are great for Pompano. Whiting and other fish will occasionally hit them too. I get them that way or with small shrimp threaded onto a Pompano rig

Also, what weight jigs do y’all suggest. Obviously gonna get a couple different ones to adjust for current but which ones are good to start with?

I’ve had better luck with the smaller ones, if you need some extra weight for casting a couple split shots should do the trick. Some people say to tip the goofy jigs with shrimp, I’ve tried that and for me using them bare has worked better. I’ve also heard some people use a skirt above the jig, but I have not tried that myself

Pomp’s are so addictive. They get frustrating too as they are there one minute and gone the next.. And may not see them “there” again for days, weeks or months. Little b******$.

Anybody catch them at Ft Desoto? I was thinking from the island just across the pass from the north beach.

Well I fished all up and down the north side of John’s Pass as well as the first 100 yards of beach to the north from sunrise to about 10:30. Not a pompano to be found. There were a ton of small lady fish. Caught one on almost every cast for the first hour or so. The other two guys throwing jigs near me were getting the same. Then the bite kinda died down around 8:45. Didn’t see anybody catch anything but ladies and lizards. I guess they just weren’t there today. Maybe I’ll hit it up again in a couple days but that’s it for my morning fishing until next weekend.

I’ll add that I was throwing a 3/4 oz chartreuse goofy jig with green and yellow tearsers. Once that tide got going I wouldn’t have wanted anything lighter. So come prepared with some heavier jigs because I was out of commission once I snagged up with my only 3/4 oz.

Anybody catch them at Ft Desoto? I was thinking from the island just across the pass from the north beach. I catch em at both piers. As already stated, they are there one minute and gone the next. I feel like I've done better at the gulf pier. Always use doc's with a trailer.

Ok, I have to have some of these. I called a few places, and as mentioned the Bait Bucket and Skyway Bait and Tackle have them, but not O'neals.

Do you retrieve the same way as for mackerel? Do you use that jig by itself or add additional sinker like for mackerel?

I use the Doc's Pompano Jig by itself. I let it sink to the bottom & then jig it until I get a strike. Then I reel. No Jerk.
