New on this board hey all. Coming down next week can't wait. Would like to target sharks and was wondering what pier is better and what baits do you like to throw. Would like to target black tips and bonnets. We will be fishing night time. Thanks Mike

I’ve never really targeted sharks from the piers. You definitely need a pier net and I don’t have one and there’s plenty of good places near me that don’t require a net. That being said sharks are pretty opportunistic eaters. Any big live or fresh dead bait should work. I like a big old pinfish or a pig fish. But I’ve caught them on just about everything you can imagine. Caught one of my best sharks on a freezer burned steak I snagged out of the freezer off inian rocks beach. They’ll really eat just about anything. The key though is to use a bait that won’t easily be picked up by the smaller fish. Not sure how experienced you are so I’ll mention the gear I’d use. I like a 6/0-10/0 non-stainless circle hook. It’s required by law if you’re unaware. Steel leader is an option but I prefer to use 80 pound mono and accept the fact that I will loose a few. I think you get more bites this way. You’re also required to have something to cut the hook and leader. Obviously a hefty rod and reel is important if you get into a big one. And there are BIG sharks at the skyway. Make sure you also take the required FWC shark smart course and avoid a ticket. I actually enjoyed it and learned a lot about shark ID. If you’re gonna keep it bleed it out immediately by cutting the gills and ice it well. Sorry if I’ve given more info than you needed but I just figured I’d rattle off my thoughts for all to see. I’ll end by saying I’m definitely no expert so take all this with a grain of salt. Anyway, welcome to the forum. I’ve been fishing Tampa bay since I was a tot but I’m pretty new to the pier. If there’s one thing I would say it’s read all the stickies on here about 5 times. They’re full of great info and will definitely help you catch good fish on the piers faster. Good luck and hope to see you out there.

Thank You for all the info. Was not aware of Course. Just took it. Can not find how to print permit on Go Outdoors Florida? I'm from ENC and fish sharks all the time. Always like to throw a rod out for them while fishing. Here we use live Blue Crabs for Bonnets and Black Tips. Thanks Again Will post pics.

If you have a net that can reach the water you can easily scoop up plenty of blue crabs for bait on an outgoing tide at the skyway. Never tried using them for sharks but I’d say if it’s worked for you else where it will probably work at the skyway.

never really target sharks but have caught bonnetheads on shrimp & crabs while fishing for other things. crabs would probably be better to keep the pinfish away. i've also seen them caught on squid.
if i had to guess, a cutbait or live bait would probably be your best bet for blacktips but you might hook into something much larger (bull, hammerhead, goliath)

Might want to check with myfwc... they requires you to take some sort of online class before you shark fish now.
