Every night for the last week I have dreamed about that big Grouper that snapped me off last week. The dream is always the same, he has a cigarette and 8 hooks hanging out of his mouth (all my hooks) and he is laughing at me...….. Well tonight I get my revenge! New conventional reel rigged up with 100 LB, ready to go. Now if I can only catch a pinfish to use for bait.....

Maybe you hooked up with a Goliath and don't know it. They are down there. If thats the case you can only hope to get a good look at him.

I was thinking the same, I was on 60 Lb test but only on a 4000 size spinning rod, I felt the weight of the fish and knew right away I had no chance at him. He just kept dragging me further and further under the pier.

Wish it would have just snapped the line... Those Tarpon are some Strong Swimmers & Love to break Your Rods when You are on the Pier. I have seen it happen several times throughout the last 45 Years. The Rods that are not being Attended to or held, go flying over the Rail.

One night My Girlfriend Dreamed that I was Fishing and a Big Shark ate Me. The next Day in front of the SS Pier Baithouse, I caught a 10' Nurse Shark. It had a Very Large Mouth when it opened up. So Maybe Your Dream will Come True or Close to it. I wish You the best in Your Dreams of Fishing !

very different styles. gag is going for a hole/rock to hide under. tarpon is trying to run. both are very strong. pitbull vs greyhound

For Gags - Imagine pulling up a VW Bug. For Tarpon - Imagine pulling against a Runaway Bus.

Gags don't usually run under the pier, unless you were fishing the pilings, and a rig that small is disaster waiting to happen. A Goliath will surely head back to the pier, but normally won't mess with a pinfish, shark will, and so will a dolphin. Tarpon will sometimes but without the right gear that's over in 2-3 seconds

Well I got my revenge - kind of! It was an awesome morning out at the NSP! Finally got my gag with the new conventional rod and 100 lb line. He was 23, damn- as hard as I tried I could not get that tape measure to 24 - released. About 1:00 using a big 6 inchh pinfish my rod goes down hard - hooked up on what everyone out there agreed was probably a big Goliath - and I mean BIG - he didn’t rock me up and I had him on for a good 5 minutes under the Pier then out in front of it and then back under. Finally he straightened my hook completely out. At least now I know my new gear can stand up pretty good. Also released two nice slot trout maybe 16-17 hated to let them go, but I brought home three mangroves, 13,11,11 and a 9 inch lane so they are currently on the grill!

Yep, know the feeling and its better that you lost just the hook rather than a break off of line or leader.
