Hey everybody! New to the forum and wanted your input on this rod/reel combo I just purchased from Bass Pro. What kind of fish can I expect to pull up with this? Will it be able to catch any good sized ones or should I try to cut the line before it breaks the rod? Thanks for any input! Newbie here!

I've never heard of anyone breaking an ugly stick but I suppose it's possible

Your ugly stick is good fishing rod, but what length did you get? 7’ft? The spinning reel on those combos are cheap and you will eventually need to get a better one. I like the Penn reels but that’s just my preference, when this reel you have breaks or wears out get a good spinning reel that has a fast retrieve and decent line capacity. Mine Penn’s will bring in almost 4’ft of line per revolution of the handle and will hold all the line I need 250+ yards of line. Bottom line good rod and cheep spinning reel, but use it and find the fishing format for that reel. On the pier you got mackerel, grouper, sheep head, jacks, sharks, rays, snapper and anything else that might swim by. Some you got to reel like crazy others you can play the fish a little as long as flipper is not around. go out and enjoy it and catch some fish.

Hoping to try my luck out there this weekend!
