I get to start with a clean slate starting my grandson's fishing experience and i would like some advice. I can start him off on either casting or trigger-spin gear. I, almost exclusively, use spinning gear so the idea of trigger spin would be more natural to me but i want to do what's best for HIM. He will be 5 later this year so i need to adjust my thinking to that of the average size and attention span of a 5 year old. i am thinking of a 4'-6" medium/light spinning rod and possibly a Pfluger trigger spin reel. The Pfluger seems to be a decent quality reel that we can move over to at least a couple of rods as he grows.
Any and all suggestions will be helpful, Thanks everyone.
I have posted this on a couple of other sites just to get a few more opinions so if you read it elsewhere, please ignore.

Yep, spinner is the way to go. Learning to use a caster could be frustrating. He can learn that as he gets more into it.

I've taken my 6yo grandson a few times recently, and I like the spinning option. Mine just had a Spider-Man pole with a closed face reel on it. I ended up letting him use my bait pole with the gold hooks on it. He's still working on using the reel though. The main problem I encountered was attention span. He got bored quick. I would put some squid on the bait pole, and let him reel in the pinfish I'd catch.

That will get His Attention. |

Most reels I got my son were pretty bad. I decided that I need to get him a proper reel for his rod. Choosing the correct equipment goes a long way to ensuring success. More anglers today are fishing with strong, no-stretch braided lines that put tremendous strain on reels. When choosing a spinning reel, it’s therefore important to look for a model with three to five stainless-steel bearings, which keep the gears and driveshaft aligned. I did some research on places like under-the-open-sky.com/best-spinning-reel when I was searching for which reel to pick. Other key spinning-reel features include a slow oscillation that tightly stacks on braided line, and a cold-forged spool, which prevents warping and isn’t as likely to get nicks in the lip that could damage the line. As for choosing between a front- and rear-drag spinning reel, it’s often a matter of personal preference. |
