Good morning guys. I haven't been on the pier in probably 15 years but I have a 7 year old who only wants to fish for the last couple years so I'm bringing him mid March. I'm an east coaster so we do reds and trout in the lagoon and surf for everything. I used to do pretty good on the pier for sheeps and macks but I'm rusty. I have the sheep covered but I only fished live for macks. I see you guys are throwing spoons (which my kid loves) what size and colors do the trick? and any other info. I plan on coming on a Saturday morning and fishing through the night, will they mess with you if you sleep in your truck? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Check the Master Good info sticky for the spoons. MM's rig may be a little hard to work for a 7 year old, possibly try a big sabiki or casting spoon/jigs. You can sleep in your truck, you have a 24 hour pass. You just have to go get another one after 24 hours. If your there at night give the Snappers a try and/or fish under the lights for whatever shows up. Good luck!

Your pass is good for both piers.

In My Opinion, I would have to agree with Karneei. My Mack Rig that I have posted in the Stickies would not be recommended for a 7 year old. I have seen people in their 20's & 30's hooking their selves or someone else. Then it would cost You about $500.00 at a hospital to get the Hook out.

Ill leave him to a spoon or live, hes got a hell of a cast and can get it in front of the reds when I tell him. I'm just going to bring rigs for everything and see what happens. I do have aerials I made with measurements off of structures on the pier to locate the rock piles if anyone is interested. files are pretty large so I would probably have to email them.

Are these just to find rock piles? It is easier just to look at the columns of the bridge. If it has 6 then straight out if the rock piles. Just cast out with a sinker and if it snags.. then you know for sure you are right.

Not a good idea to post your email on a public forum. Your just inviting a lot of spam. You should use a private message to share it. I'll leave them posted unless you want me to delete them.

Small 1/2oz spoons worked near vertical (or close to pier) work very well and one of my most productive methods of catching macks.
If the current gets too fast or winds pick up...go to 3/4 oz spoon.
Silver is best. Gold is great in stained/cloudy water. I use either 40 or 50 lb test flourocarbon leader.
Yo yo the spoon. Drop to bottom...crank to top...drop to bottom again...repeat

Vertical jigging I got that! Usually for snapper though. Appreciate the info and I'll give it a shot. Do you guys use mostly single hook spoons or treble?

Got to be careful with the treble hooks. MM made comment on thread Treble vs circle hooks.
Do not want to end up in the emergency room.

We're good with the trebles, my boys favorite lure has 2 and he hasn't stuck me yet! We flats fish out of a 1974 Grumman canoe with aluminum outriggers and a longtail motor so close quarters.
I did wonder and maybe you all will have some input. Is it worth setting up a trolley rig in the middle of the south pier? I don't really want to get in the crowd at the end with my kid and most of the fishing when we are there will be outgoing tide so to be out on the west I would have to. Trying to have a plan and all bases covered.

Trying to have a plan and all bases covered. The Middle of the SS Pier should be fine to take Your Kids. Most Anglers at this time of the year venture towards the end of the Pier for the Kings since they are now coming in. Plus the Bait Shop is right there in case the Kids needs a drink or snack.

When was the last time a king was caught at the SSP?

2 in the last week. I have a couple rod and reels for kings but like I said I don't know if it's worth the time setting up unless we're at the end.
