It is definitely not as easy to get it at night lately(atleast from my experiences) but I think tipping it with squid or shrimp would definitely help. Still can get bait but it takes a little longer than it does during the day.

Knotty, look for the bait schools with a spot light. Use a small Sabiki, you should be able to keep yourself in bait. If you tip with squid, at least from my experience, you will get more grunts and pin fish then Greenies. Depends on what you want for bait. I wish I was going to be there Saturday night, I would loan you one of my nets. Give both ways a try, with and without squid, either way you should score some. More than likely though, someone near you will have a net and help you out. Good luck, nights have been a little slow, but with the Snapper bite good right now you should do pretty good.

You'll also have better luck catching Greenbacks at night if you concentrate on the Upicurrent side of the bridge, as opposed to the downcurrent side. As far as "tipping" your Sabiki, try adding a length of line to the bottom of your Sabiki, before tying on a sinker to get your hooks up off the bottom a bit more, and avoid the bottom fish. Also, if your Sabiki comes with the little glow beads, try "charging" the flourecent beads with a flashlight. If your REALLY desperate, and the Sabiki ain't workin, get ya some #8, or # 10 gold hooks, and tie your own rig, instead of tipping with Squid try really tiny pieces of fresh shrimp, or even the scales, or skin from a Greenback, or a pinfish. Just enough to stink up the hook a little. Again tie your rig so the hooks will stay up off the bottom a bit... Say about 2 feet or so. Move around and try different areas. On heavy current nights, the Horse minners, will hang really tight to the Pilings.. Try fishing Directly in the lights tight to the pilings and deep as you can (But not quite all the way on the bottom) On slower current nights they'll tend to "disperse" a little more... Try casting out aways on the upcurrent side of the bridge and let your rig drift slowly back towards you while lightly twitching your rod tip. Repeat this pattern over and over and you should get a few. I've had nights catching bait for the Overnight Boat, where you could'nt hardly get to the PinFish, for the GreenBacks Harrrassing your bait. Another tip, and one I can't really explain, is when you're having trouble catching bait, and you are using Squid, try switching to fresh pieces of Shrimp.. I've seen it work like a charm more times than I can remember. Right dead of the end of both piers in the darkness, deep, and tight to the Pilings is another favorite spot of mine for catching really nice Horse Minners. Be careful not to use too much weight to. When targeting Greenies, ya just want enough lead to hold yer line slightly tight in the current. They prefer more of a "fluttery" action, as opposed to straight up and down vertical presentation. Shoot I could go on and on and on. Guess that's enough fer now! Best of luck to everybody! "SkyJay"

Good info right there. "Tie a length of line before the weight". That's good, can't believe I never thought of that. Again, good luck Knotty, knock em dead.

Hey Knotty... A birthday tip 4 you! Hit the "Y" on the way out and pick up a few LadyFish... Deadly bait fished dead on the bottom. Cut small "Chunks, or "Steaks" lengthwise, hook em one time and put em in the rocks... Groupers are chewin... They're just picky, and they're keyin on dead bait. Keep Iced well so they stay fresh, otherwise they'll get mushy. Check yer baits often, but stick at it and when the bite is on, you will score. Cut the head off about 3inches behind the gills, and put it on yer Tarpon Pole... Yee-Haww Be especially dilligent around the tide changes... Good Luck... Catch a biggun! J.

I like small -med. live shrimp either freelined downcurrent in the lights when ya see em bustin, or drifted with a small amount of lead on the upcurrent side,(cast out, slowly drift bait towards you, repeat, never letting bait rest on bottom, kinda like you plastic wormin for bass slowly reel and stop, reel and stop action works great) in the middle at the "Y", is a real good spot to get em once it gets good and dark also...
They'll hit just about anything though...
Gotchas, Mirrodines, Docs jigs, Bucktails,Fry Bait, and more.
I prefer using a small #4, or #1 hook, and live bait, however for a couple diferent reasons.
One being, I ussually try to keep em alive as long as i can in the tank, and always freeline, or ballon at least one whenever I can...
The artis tend to tear thier mouths up pretty good, and they don't stay alive as long.
2 being, they're really keyin on Shrimp, so why not feed em what they want and get a few real quick, and then get on to fishin, instead of spending a whole bunch of time catching bait.
The live Shrimp method has never let me down, and I'm sort of a stay with the girl that brought ya to dance kinda feller. Having said all that LadyFish live or dead is the # 1 best bet bait at the Pier at night, in the summer!
Best of luck!
J.
