[glow=green,2,300]July 28, 2008 Contact: Officer David Dipre, 305-481-1332 Officers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office are teaming up to educate fishermen about varieties of fish, many of which are being illegally harvested in very high numbers in the Keys. The officers are posting signs on 24 fishing bridges in the Keys, from Key Largo to Key West. The signs illustrate the most common types of fish caught at the bridges, including snapper, snook, shark and grouper. It also shows the names of the fish in Spanish and English, as well as the size and bag limits. Many of the fish being caught from the bridges are not legal to take, according to FWC officers. The officers repeatedly cite fishermen with multiple fishing violations, such as keeping fish over the bag limit, catching fish out of season, and keeping fish under the minimum legal size. “We want to make sure the public is aware of fishing regulations,” said Officer David Dipre. “Many fishermen who receive warnings or citations say they didn't know there were regulations in place. While many fishermen may be telling the truth, others may not. By putting up these signs, we’re increasing awareness and eliminating the ‘I didn’t know’ excuse.”[/glow] I THINK THIS SHOULD BE DONE EVERY WHERE JUST NOT IN THE KEYS .

Finally, some common sense to the problem. Maybe this will spread to the west coast.
Thanks Teddy

I see above that the keys are in monroe county...I hear that you aren't allowed to spear fish in monroe county. Does this mean your not allowed to spear in the keys? Not sure if anyone on hear spears. And sorry for going off your topic..I was just curious.

They need to post signs on all piers that would help the confusion for some people

They might have to include a few more languages at the Skyway. A pretty diverse crowd assembles there. Of course law breakers are law breakers and no amount of signs are going to stop them unfortunately. But I think it would be a great start. Like the story, you can't say you didn't know the law, cause there it is.

I like the idea. I know I still have to scramble once in a while for my regulations and identification books.

Signs like that on the pier would be invaluable. Especially to those of us that are newbies. Plus all the visitors that are there, that normally don't fish our waters.

well i tinkered with the sign and heres mine that would be for the whole state lol [glow=blue,2,300]and for those that like to educate others on the fishing regs here is what an fwc officer told me to do tonight . he said that most all bait shops have the regs book that comes out every 6 months , he said to ask the bait shop if you can grab a bunch and tell them what your doing with them and then hand those out to people that dont know the rules or regs [/glow] this is what hes talking about .........

Ohh yea man .. you gotta know the difference. I have a buddy of mine that got popped by fwc on a redfish.. He didnt know to pinch the tail.. When fwc pinched the tail.. He was 1/2 an inch over slot... And yes,he got the ticket. Worst part is he is in marine biology and could loose his job over it.. So he is fighting it tooth and nail. Big ignorance of the regs isnt an excuse. Be sure you know which fish is which and how to measure it properly.

Wow Steve, that's rough. In my opinion, the FWC officer was an A-Hole, sorry if I am offending anyone with this comment. Too much power and no common sense. Seen it all to often. He should have been warned, first offense, with all that to loose. It's not like he was holding a 30" Red. A Jerk with a badge.
