I went to the pier Saturday, got to the north pier around 4AM.. I wanted to see all this live squid action stuff people were talking about. I think I may have saw some things in the mix with the baitfish but I didn't get lucky with getting any.
I wanted to get there early also to have a chance at a morning Tarpon. Granted I have never caught a tarpon and that is one I am Dying to catch, of course I don't even know the tricks for catching them besides just drifting a big live bait.
No luck really in the dark although saw some tarpon rolling, caught a few mackeral in the morning. I also had the big rod down for a jewfish. That was another I have been wanting to catch. I have only hooked up 4 times, first time I was only using 80lb and it snapped when I had drag too tight so not a long fight at all.... second and third I had put 250 on but was away from the pole and he got enough line out to get around a piling and snapped. The fourth one didn't get away although he was small around 125-150 some guy was telling me. I only had my camera phone and you can;t tell anything from it. Someone next to me said his girlfriend caught it on video and would email it to me so hopefully I get it.
Other than that it was a slow day not any mackeral really. Went to the south pier around 1:30 and as soon as I got on pier there were two kids in a pontoon boat hooked up on a big tarpon, snapped right as they tried to grab it to pull on boat. I stayed there with no luck for around 45 minutes, as I was leaving those two kids had another tarpon.. :-( makes me wish I had a boat...
Went back to the north pier for a little, nothing but little macks, saw a tarpon roll so I dropped down a live one in the water with a medium spinning rod with 20 or 25 line no leader( don't know why I didnt rig up the heavier stuff, guess I was in a hurry to get bait to him), well I saw him come take bait and I went to set hook and line immediately snapped.... then rigged up the heavy one and it drifted under the dock on top and then I felt a big tug after seeing another huge one roll, whatever tugged took the bait off the hook... now I am addicted for a tarpon and plan to get down there as often as possible.
I drive a maroon 4 door f-250 diesel when I go down there if anyone ever sees me say Hi...
