OK guys, I've been to the pier(s) three times in the past two weeks, for about 6 hours at a whack and have done terrible. I mean, I would be fine catching snappers and grouper, but I mean nadda. It could be the conditions, the tide, or maybe my rig. My first free-line was Saturday night, but I think things had shut down(not to mention the ssp was packed and I ended up south of the bait shop). So I wanna know, am I doing something wrong? Been botton fishing with like a 1.5 oz weight, using squid mostly, cuz the dang baits tear up shrimp. I've been catching greenbacks on a Sabiki, but I dont wanna bottom fish those, do I? Help..........

Pk you can use live or cut greenbacks on the bottom. Unless you got a big chunk of squid and you get it out in some structure where the grouper live, then those pinfish are just nibbling on it like the shrimp you are losing. The best suggestion I can make is to talk to other fisherman, the baitshop etc.. You have to pay attention to the tides etc..It will greatly increase the chances of you catching something. The nightime sanpper bite is picking up now.
Come on guys jump in here with some tips for PK

Where on the pier are you fishing? Ive found that the snapper bite is better near the end of the southside pier between the last bathroom and the end. I usually use a 1 ounce weight (egg sinker) above about a 2ft leader (20-30lb mono in case I get something bigger than a snapper), 2/0 owner live bait hook, and cut greenbacks. I drop my line straight off the pier, letting it hit bottom and drift back underneath me. Slays em every time, or at least when theyre biting. Grouper for me is hit and miss. Sometimes I get alot of shorts, sometimes I cant buy a bite.

Thanks everybody. We've been hitting the ssp, mostly cuz it's longer and there's a better shot at getting a good spot. Been using a rig much like you say, but haven't been using cut bait. We're gunna head out again tomorrow night around low tide (5:30-6:00) and fish till it's in, so hopefully we'll get a nibble. We (cavemanfisher...that's my son) will be in a black Nissan Exterra. Hopefully I'll be close to one of you guys.

Curious?? what is the depth of the water around the piers near the end of either one and 2 what is the height from the water to the bottom of the pier. I am building a custom gaff so a little bit of info would be a big help
