Did i hear right....now u need to have circle hooks by law if your fishing for Grouper and Snapper?
If so...i normally use a 3-0 live bait hook for snapper...and 5-0 or 6-0 for grouper depending on the bait im getting that day....
Do those sizes need adjustment when switching to a circle hook? Whats a good brand? Can you buy em in packs of 50 like the stainless mustads?

federel waterrs only set them hooks.
circlcle hooks bhreak jaws joint bones.
id rather be able to open my mouth back anfd forth, and have a hook rustin out in my big fat grouper belly, than starve to death with a broke jaw joint but then again as old as i am im liable to die fore the hook rusts out.its a ketch 22 i swear

It doesn't apply to the Skyway. Here is a line from the law: The new rules require all persons harvesting any species of reef fish from a vessel in Gulf waters to possess and use non-stainless steel circle hooks when fishing with natural baits. Here's the whole news release: myfwc.com/whatsnew/08/statewide/News_08_X_ReefFishGear.htm

As I understood it the rule applies to vessels only.

right now it state hasnt followed the new regs but if you are 3 miles off shore you need to have circle hooks to catch grouper and snapper , but.......its in the works that next year it will be all waters, state and fedral water that you will have to used circle hooks with no off set to fish for reef fish , so land lubbers are safe for now ... but there will be a lot of changes comeing in the next five years . like the other item of haveing a rec fishermens data base starting 2009 you have to reg with this to be on a boat fishing any where but shore base fishermen dont have too , and that will be changeing in 2010 and it will be any one that want to fish in the coastal states.

Shouldn't apply to any land based fishing, unless you got there by boat and would need a fishing liscence. You can't even get a direct answer from the FWC. Need to flag down and FWC officer next time I see one on the pier.

Ask a FWC officer, ask 5 and get 5 different answers. We are not the only ones confused. Which way I got to hold my mouth when I catch them?

Part of the circle hook deal, also says you need a de-hooker and a venting tube.

Heres a question for ya then floridaboy..... If im in my vessel fishing the skyway reefs... Im technically still in the bay.....But technically... im in gulf waters......... ?? So who the heck knows.... Just be sure to have circles with you .. if ya get checked you can say you were tarpon fichin or for catfish ..lol... Till they start gettin tough. As for the venting tool and dehooker...... I guess its part of the economy stimulas program.. you gotta go buy em..

No, I think you would be in Bay waters. Gulf waters start at Egmont Key.
But remember, you can only keep grouper on days with an R in them and snapper on days WITHOUT an R in them IF the full moon that month falls on a Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday. If the full moon is on Monday, Wednesday or Friday, you can only fish on the outgoing tide on days that begin with at "T", and the incoming on the other days IF your last name begins with L-Z. If your last name begins with A-K, the opposite applies....
Hope that clears it up... ;D

Floridaboy, I follow you so far, with one bit of confusion. What if I want to fish on Sunday, with a last name D, full moon on an incoming tide. Can I still keep Snook even if one eye is Not Blue.

Heres the answer youre looking for folks, from the latest Florida Sportfishing Magazine I picked up today. This was taken from the FAQ section of the new Reef Regulations article.
"Do I have to use circle hooks, venting tools and dehooking device if Im targeting gulf reef fish from shore, a pier, on a jetty or a bridge?"
No. This gear is only required if you are harvesting reef fish from a vessel. However, the use of circle hooks and dehooking devices are always recommended.
There it is in black and white.
