33 years ago today, I caught my first Tarpon off Redington Pier. Spent the entire summer (and the next) fishing off that pier, until I got barred for beaching a 9 1/2' Tiger Shark one summer morning. "Jaws" was in the theaters, and the Mayor called threatening to shut down the pier. I grew up on that pier (in more ways than one - I think her name was Cheryl ;D)

My first ever shark was caught on that pier in summer of 88 i had just graduated highschool and moved back to florida. It was an acidental catch while i was foshing for snook with a live pin about halfway out on the pier.I have been hooked on shark fishing ever sinch. There was a bench behind the wall on the end of the pier ( may still be there ) i all so had some fun there with my highschool sweet heart at the time.

I fished Indian Rocks a few times after I got thrown off Redington, but there was a rivalry in the Suncoast Tarpon Roundup between the 2 piers, and sometimes it wasn't very friendly, so I switched to the Skyway. The next summer the owner let me back on Redington.
I was using a Penn 6/0 with about 700 yards of 40 lb Ande, and a 1/2 stingray for bait. The Tiger headed for Mexico on a slow and steady run, and stopped when I had less than 50 yards left on the reel. An hour later, I had it up to the pier.
I ended up cutting it up and giving it to the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary to feed the birds. Looking back, I regret killing a breeder that size.

I killed the first shark i caught because i thought i was gonna eat it but i dident know how to clean so i wasted it. I have not killed another shark since then. Mabey if i catch and release another 100 sharks i might have made up for the 1 wasted. NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But hey i bet the birds enjoyed it.
