Hello all:
New to saltwater fishing and have only been to Sebastian pier once, surf fished unsuccessfully twice.. So Skyway really interests me. Even for a 2.5 hour drive.
Of course I have a few questions. I am using a 9ft medium action rod, is this overkill?
Right now spooled with 20 mono and 30 braid leader. Am I correct from doing extensive bookwork (web work?) that it's probably not a good idea to use braid leader due to the rockiness at Skyway?
Is free lining the best way to go? Secondarily fish-finder rig? Can a Pompano/Chicken rig play at the Skyway Pier(s)?
I can expect many break-offs? Guess I better get proficient at tying??
I plan on Sabiki rig for bait, haven't used it yet but expect to be prudent to avoid tangles. Got extras for sure. Are baitfish usually available this way? I am trying to study up to tell the difference amongst them but I do know fishing is a PRACTICAL course, no T or F or essays will get me through....
I also assume weekday/nights are less crazy? I really like the convenience of not having to haul the beach cart out but does this mean that the <a-hem> yahoos tend to proliferate? Thumping loud music and running around is not my thing.
If no bites in about 20 minutes, I see people say to move around. Is it possible to be walking around casting up and down and not disturb others? Does this mean move around and try the empty parking spaces for a while?
Thanks much. This is an AWESOME forum dedicated so narrowly to this pier. I appreciate all that I have read and will read here.
D
Thanks for any advice.

Hey man I'm new to the forum too but have fished the ssp for a few months and have done pretty good. Macs will be there all year round pretty much and they put up a good fight on light tackle and good eating too! I use a 20 pound braid mainline and a 25 pound mono or fluorocarbon leader with a 2/0 thin wire live bait hook and free line a small whitebait. If you want grouper I would use mono. Free line a pin fish along the rock piles and you might hook up with a gag. Be sure to have some beefy tackle for the though they like to get you in the rocks down there. Bonita have been showing up here and there at the end of the pier. Tackle for them is the same as macks but a little heavier leader. Good luck and tight lines!

So I guess I need to lighten up on the rod? 9 ft seems a bit much for macks then?

If the rod isn't too heavy you should be fine but it won't be as much as a fight. I would say lighten up a little bit. I use a 7ft 12-20 lb rod

I agree landon. I was out there today with a buddy and the 9ft seemed too heavy. We actually broke out our lil 6 foot poles from up north we used in the lakes and threw them around. My bud caught a baby mack and trout. And a few pinfish. I got nada.
I didn't see anyone else doing well on either bridge. But it was nice to get out.
Thanks for the advice.

Hi guys...newbie to site and SSP. How far would you guess the freeline out to the rock piles are? Thanks. DoubleJ, Newb here too. Been fishing the SSP for a couple of months now. Sporadic success at best ;-) But a ton of sage advice to be had from the vets here on this board. From what I can tell, the board has declined a bit from its heyday, but there are several of the guys here from that time that still keep it alive and dispense great advice to us newbies. For that I tip my hat. Tears, SkyJay, havetofish, Blacktip, and the mods here are awesome guys that know their sh*t and are well versed on the piers. Look through some of the stickies and you will find a lot of good advice. As far as free lining the rocks....Check this link to a sticky at top of the forum. Gives you an idea of what the deal is. skywaypiers.proboards.com/thread/43/sticky-pier-rockpile-pics-arialBest of luck to everyone. Thinking of going out this afternoon to catch the tide changes myself.

Hi guys...newbie to site and SSP. How far would you guess the freeline out to the rock piles are? Thanks. I'm sure no expert but if the rockpiles are at the |/\| pillars then quite a shirt distance. Depth I do not know. One if the sticky posts has overhead google shots of the pier but they do not show on my end for some reason. But try a Google earth type thing and you'll see it's like 2 or so roadway widths out is all.

I can't tell you much about grouper fishing since I never really target them with success.
However, here's what fishing is like right now.
A lot of small macks and the #1 way to catch them is with a big sabiki. Heard there are bonita running off and on. It was not the case for today. You can catch them just like with mack. Best is free line a white bait. Gotcha, spoon, and even sabiki will catch them.
The bait fish are all mix size right now. Most of them are on the smaller end. Sabiki will catch you the bigger one.
Cut bait and small white bait on the bottom near reefs or on the reefs will get you some black sea bass.
Fiddler crabs are really good to catch sheepshead right now. Spotted Sea trout should be on the flat right now... or near the troll booth.

thanks for all the replies...went out yesterday morning (6-11), use a sabiki= some small Macs and huge greenbacks. I looked at the overheads and did the google earth. Using the bait shop as a reference, I did the distance with google earth's measurement tool. It was stating that the piles are about 50 yds out from pier....will catch an out-going tide and freeline some bait, worth a try. Heading out there this morning, will be around bait shop or a few light poles back toward entrance...tight lines guys.

All newbies to skyway I suggest a stop into the NSP bait shop and lash for big mike. He is great at getting whatever gear you have set up correctly for pier fishing.
