I was fishing with two buddies today and they were using black wire leaders and I was using flouro 20lb leader. We were using the same bait and similar methods. I left with three and lost a couple of others that would've been keepers. They didn't have a single hook up all day! I felt bad, but it never occurred to me until I had one of those lightbulb moments that they were using black wire leaders. I know people use wire for macks and some use long shank hooks, etc. I use regular flouro leader and circle hooks, sure I lose some to cut offs and have to retie often but I feel like that's the nature of the beast when you are fishing for toothy types. So what's your preference?

Black Wire leaders have always been a big NO for me. They seem like they would be highly visible to the fish and I never see people use them. For Spanish Macks I almost never use wire. I use 20-30lb Fluorocarbon leader like you. I never get bit off as long as I am ready to quickly set the hook when the fish strikes. I run into problems when the wind picks up and there is a lot of slack in my line. This leads to occasional break offs. The only time I ever use wire is when I am fishing for bigger mackerel such as Cero or Kings, and sharks. The wire I use in these cases is a very light copper color to reduce visibility.
