Wondering if there are any experienced wade fishers on here. Now that the heat is going up, I would really like to get into this.
What extra equipment is needed and are there some commonly known hotspots around the skyway?

Just look at the where the guys are wading...I ain't comfortable without waders, but plenty of guys don't care and I have some friends that catch reds and trout consistently there. Look for the holes and grass edges.

bigwman, Lots of us are kinda new to wading, so any help would be appreciated. What have you got in your flats caddy..i.e. water, lures, etc..do you drag a shrimp bucket. Also is there public access to the flats at Pinellas Point and other spots you mentioned. Do you ever wade at the Skyway?

All that seems a little busy for me but im sure if i seen you in action i would understand. When i use to do a lot of surf fishing i would wade all most chest deep but on the beach with the waves all i could handel was my rod and my bait bucket tied around my waist filled with greenies or sand fleas whatever was available at the time. I found that shrimp on the beach led to a lot of catfish. When fishing with a buddy i would let my bucket float about 6 feet away from me and i would fish upcurrent so my nuddy had easy access to the bait. When i was fishing more spainish i had to carry a little tackle out incase of break offs but dident usually need to much.

Hey Taz, I wade fished for many years. My back wont let me do it anymore. Thats why I have taken up pier fishing. One very important thing to remember is to be aware of stingrays. Always shuffle your feet across the bottom. If you have ever been stung by one as I have, you wont ever just walk again. Slide your feet please. Waders are not really needed when the water is warm. Just wear a good divers boot or something that will protect your feet. Another common mistake is to tie your stringer with fish to yourself. If a shark comes up, and there are many on the flats, he grabs your fish and you go with it. Tie a knot so that a pull will untie it easily. Most of my wading was done from bishops harbour, north to Lil' Manatee. Work the small sand spots that usually have a small depression around the grass. Fish tend to hide in the grass and ambush anything that passes by.
Good Luck

If you go across the Courtney Causeway towards Clearwater, there is a baitshop on the left hand side. There is a side road that leads to the water right biside it. Follow that to the end, park on the right side of the road away from the house there. Step down off the seawall and you can wade fish all the way around the point there. I've done pretty good with trout and snook in the past there with the occassional redfish. I usually get there early morning. I do not have all the nice equipment that alot of people have for wade fishing, so its nice to be close to the truck just in case.

if you want a group wade fishing day nothing beats ft de sota. There are miles of places to wade. Trount, reds, flounder, snook, jacks, ladyfish, shark you name it. Just stop and see the park ranger and he will point you in the right direction.
I wade several area around pinnellas county. I bring one rod, many different artificials and life bait.
Get a five gallon bucket, drill an few holes in it to let the water flow thur and tie one of those noodles ( kids swin with them) to the top lip all arounf the top. This will keep the bucket afloat. Tie the bucket to your self with a quick release knot.
I seen people rig rod holders to this, Float bait buckets, cutting boards to chum. You are only limited by what you can carry.
Let me know if you plan a trip to ft de soto. Been a while since I was there and I hear the wade fishing has been great with lots of gator trout
