Got to the skyway at about 3pm and set up just past the bathroom after the baitshop. Tons of greenies and a few pins thrown in the mix. I was even lucky enough to get a nice blue runner.
I was whipping out a bottom rig with a 4oz. weight with the slight incoming tide and had some excellent strikes. Had a 20" grouper pulled up and plenty of hits but no hook set.
The blue runner was absolutely hammered and I'm wondering if a goliath took it.
I kept getting "V" shaped, big bites taken out of the greenbacks but had no idea what the heck it could be. I'm thinking maybe a king or a snapper? The bites were very big and definitely not a grouper with the shape.
Besides that, I didn't see much action from others. They sure looked pissed when I put the 20" grouper back in the water haha.

Thanks for the report. Other than cut Blue Runners for Mangos,, I've never caught a damn thing with them,,, whole or cut.

I had my rod in the one of the holes cut out on the bridge while talking to another angler and he said it was moving. I turned around and it was doubled over and almost impossible to get it out of the hole. Needless to say it's a heavy action boat rod too. haha

My guess is that the V shaped bites were either Mangos or Macks. I have caught many grouper on blue runners, but Kings, Tarpon and Sea Turtles will also take them. You didn't mention if the runner was freelined or on the bottom.

Havetofish: The blue runner was sitting in the bottom about 130 feet out. I reel to set the circle hook and didnt had the bait torn completely off the hook. I also am starting to think that it might be mangos going for them. I might try and rig up some tandem hooks or a stinger rig next time.

If not a Jewfish might could'a been Flipper... Or maybe WTF fish is back. lol v shaped scars on yer bait might be Lizzardfish. Who knows. Thats what keeps it interesting. NEVER know what could hit next. next time you get a runner freeline that sucker on heavy tackle on the outgoing tide
