When Gags are outlawed only outlaws will have Gags ): Just brushed up on the latest Gobbledeegoop the Feds are trying to feed us and honestly folks theres steam comin out of my ass right now! What a bunch of bullcrap! "Amendment 32 " theyre calling it. I call it freakin Communism! Theyre cutting out the recreational anglers to study the impact of "dead discards" on the population. At the same time theyre going to allow the greedy comercial market close to 5 million pounds of fish. That is just f###ing insane. Excuse me while I change my seat cushion.

When I think about all the 20 to 21 15/16" Grouper Ive released unharmed, in the past few years only to have those fish potentially end up iced down in some market showcase or a touron dinner plate it makes me sick. Ever since the minimumn size increase (which was in my opinion entirely unfair to the near shore recreational angler trying to feed his family) Ive closely followed the guidlines we were told to follow. Many times releasing fish that easily measured in the interest of good Karma. Ive caught and released the same fish many times as well as a few that had obviously been released by someone else. Ive witnessed brazen abuse of the resource, the regulations, and lackluster enforcememt of the existing laws. Seems these days greed and shady goins on are the rule and not the aception. The way I see It the easy fix to the problem is NO SALE , GAMEFISH STATUS on Gags Snapper and Amberjack with reasonable realistic size and bag limits with RELIABLE and EFFECTIVE ENFORCEMENT is our only hope.

Our only sensible option is to protect the resource much like the ban on Gill Nets and Game fish status on Snook Redfish ect. Historically it has been COMERCIAL EXPLOITATION of resources that doomed healthy populations of fish and game. Not the weekend warrior recreational angler! I mean just imagine where we would be at if Redfish werent given NO SALE status! Let the bastards hear from you now and dont let up until this issue is put to public vote and passed into law before the Greedy bastards ice and ship all the fish away. Personally Ill be eating every decent sized Gag I land until something gives! Catch me if you can Mr. GW! Thanks for letting me rant... I feel better now. If only a little. ARRRGH!

gag grouper fishing will potentially be banned for 6 months starting in Jan 2011.
I'm with you, lets ban commercial gag grouper fishing for 6 months.

6 Months would be a start. I would propose a permanent ban however. And dont start in about economic impacts and bla bla bla about comercial interests. I intended to include a link to support my babbling but cant get it to load. There is a November 30 2010 update at FWC website under Gulf Grouper regulations that will (or should explain) to enlighten those of us who road the short bus to school and are a little slow. Amendment 32... Perhaps webmaster Havetofish wouldnt mind posting that link? C Ya

The whole issue makes me want to At least its not in State Waters for us Landlubbers for now. I don't like this little sentence.. "This interim rule will only affect federal waters, but the FWC may address potential rule changes for gag grouper in state waters of the Gulf of Mexico following final action by NOAA Fisheries Service." When the hell is the final action scheduled? Anyway here's the link..scroll down for the Update Nov. 30th Update

According to SnookMooks article today, the FWC has decided that state waters will NOT be affected by the closure: forshorefishing.blogs.theledger.com/13454/noaa-announces-six-month-closure-for-gulf-of-mexico-gag-grouper/December 4th, 2010 11:14am NOAA Announces Six Month Closure For Gulf of Mexico Gag Grouper by Michael "SnookMook" Wilson The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries Service has announced a six month closure for gag grouper in Gulf of Mexico federal waters. The closure will begin on January 1, 2011 and could be extended for an additional six months if NOAA deems it necessary. This interim rule will be in effect for 180 days and it could be extended for another 186 days upon further review. At this time the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will not extend this closure to state waters less than nine nautical miles from shore. This rule will also not affect the recreational catch of red or black grouper. The FWC has updated the information at its grouper regulations page on its website. .............................................................................

Maybe its me and maybe Snookmook can clarify it, but I can't find where the updated FWC page says "At this time the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will not extend this closure to state waters less than nine nautical miles from shore."

There isn't really much to clarify. The FWC updated the grouper page on Nov. 30. My statement of: "at this time the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will not extend this closure to state waters less than nine nautical miles from shore."is as accurate as I could write as of today. If the FWC was going to adhere to the NOAA Fed rule they would have changed the season info in the graphic box at the grouper page link. It is still being considered, so I may be writing an update to this at some point. I sure hope that is not the case, but I will keep you all up to date. This is a link to the agenda the FWC discussed during their two day meeting. www.myfwc.com/NEWSROOM/10/statewide/News_10_X_PostCommDec.htmIt says nothing about adhering to the NOAA Federal grouper closure. This is the only mention of grouper fishery discussion. Commissioners also approved a federal consistency rule that will require commercial harvesters to hold a federal Gulf Individual Fishing Quota vessel account to commercially harvest reef fish species (groupers and tilefish) in Gulf of Mexico state waters, remove the 6,000-pound limit for commercial grouper vessel trips in Gulf waters, and clarify which federal permits and licenses are required to harvest Gulf and South Atlantic reef fish.

I'm confused...if everything goes as proposed...can we still fish for gags on the skyway?

capt mels has several forums under the offshore section covering this. Its common sense that commercial fishing is what is hurting the population, as it does every other species. Unfortunetly America is no longer for the people but for the corporation. Oh well I know I will still get mine regardless but by just being sneakier. What really gets me is how red grouper is only 18" for commercial while 20" for the rest of us
