Edited the date...changed from the 34th to the 24th Got there about 11am. Water was still and clear. Bait was deep for a while till about noon, then it was EVERYWHERE. Got some greenies, caught 4 or 5 short grouper, 3 or 4 10" mangos that went back in, 3 keepers between 11 and 12"...saw some guys at the end land a couple of small sharks...not sure what kind... Something grabbed my bait on my snapper rig and my reel started screaming.....line peeling underneath me...tightened up the drag a little so he couldnt get TOO far and SNAP! Popped my hook off my leader. Rigged my bigger pole and couldnt get him again. Not sure what it was. Moved to a grouper spot, got two 15 inchers and that was about it. Left at 8pm. Heading out of town right now, hopefully be back by morning sometime to get back out there tomorrow. Did I mention I hate 2 tide days?

David dont be so critical and hard on yourself two tide days suck bad and are hard to fish...slow water movement and usually the wrong direction on which you wish to fish...tarpon like fast moving waters...and grouper as we all know are ambush eaters...so if baits not flushing by like on a 4 tide day or even a faster tide gonna be harder to get'm to eat so dont give up just watch the tides....good luck next time.

We were on the SSP Sat night from about 10:30 pm to 1:00 am between the last restroom and the end. We pretty much fished the pilings between the two sides. Snapper bite was consistent the whole time but it was pretty much shorties all night. Did manage one beast that was almost 12" but I let him go since it was the only one all night that was even close. We did not have any greenies so it was frozen shrimp all night. caught the usually variety of grunts and such as well. Wind was blowing pretty good but it didn't seem to bother most people unless you were freelining. Saw one guy at the end with a nice gag as we were leaving. all in all it was a fun night out with the kids.

Hey Guys/Gals, unconfused me about the tides, which is best for fishing, 1 a day or 2??? I don't know much about fishing, but learn a lot from you guys on this site and the previous one on the Skyway Piers. About a year ago on the skyway site (message board) there was a long string of comments about tides. All were in agreement that as far as fishing goes, 2 tides a day (high tides) was much better for fishing than one high tide. For the past year, I relied on that info to judge when I should/should not go throw a line at the pier, as well as the weather conditions. I've been reading this info the past few days and the majority of you feel that one high tide per day is much better for fishing. Help...I'll apreciate any info you want to part with, thanks

fast movin tides are always better (in my own opinion) others may feel different views on this subject...i like to fish 4 tide days catch bait at the end of the incoming tide and fish the start through finish of the out goin and again relax durin incommin (sometimes i might through heavier lead and let the bait drift back across the rocks in the opposite direction then usual.) other then that i usually only fish outgoin tide on NSP...

David, the last three times out for me was unproductive. my son caught a 3ft blacktip last time out, and caught bait the whole time we were there. i limit when i go out there now because of the fuel cost for me because it is over an hour for me to get there. however everytime i plan on it i get psyched to go. some one always as a good day at the piers maybe we were just in the wrong place. just dont be so hard on your self.

bigw, I was right at the end gulfside...thats the only place Ive found where the snapper bite is ALWAYS on at some point. Ive caught a few here and there but that is the spot, at least for me. The grouper bite was off all weekend, dont beat yourself up. I got a couple of shorts Saturday but Sunday they never even sniffed my bait. What else do you target out there besides grouper? Myself I go for mangos first cuz I know I will bring some home, then I go for the gags. That way Im not too depressed when I get skunked by em. LOL. Edit: I just noticed you already posted what you target. Havent seen too many tarpon, macks, or kings lately, and Ive never seen anyone land a pomp where Im usually at. You oughtta come on down near the end and get in on the mango action...Theyre not as fun as some of the other fish, but at least the action is usually good. And theyre tasty to boot

I think we can probably put our Tarpon plans on hold until July. Most of the fish are on the beaches, getting ready to head offshore to spawn. It happens during the full moon in May and June (1 down, 1 to go)

Id love to target some pomps when the time is right. Ill be hitting you up for some info on that one of these days. Its getting time where I need to broaden my horizons and start targeting fish other than snapper and grouper at the pier.
After hearing that a few people spotted a few cobia by the end of the pier last weekend, Im pretty sure that might have been what broke me off....if only Id been using my bigger pole.
