your set-up should do ya fine.but 150# is probably the lightest you'll want to go.i've seen 2 9/0's with 200 mono on each rod tied to one 14/0 hook and there still wasn't no stoppin that fish.live jack should get you hooked up,or use a spanish......any thing BIG will usually work.stingray wings is a great bait.use a knocker rig, enough lead to keep your bait down.i use two 8 oz egg sinkers.like the fact you got a way to cut your line close to the fish.see ya like the s.s.p. fish the gulf side, say last 150 feet of pier.get your bait under there some.might only take 5 minutes or an hour but you'll hook up.good luck to ya and KEEP YOUR FEET ON THE CONCRETE!!!big fishies you playin with.

Qwik note BigW...
If ya have a problem getting a xxxlarge bait to use, don't count out a big ole slimy kitty.
easy enough to come by, in the shallow saandy bottom on cut sq, or shrimp ect, clip the spikes for your safety. Have caught a many a mudfish on catfish, big crabs, ladyfish, whatever you can get but xxxlarge. Tie yer shoes tight homie
Jay.

i caught a 6 foot long jewfish recently without a rod or reel, just a friends invented rig dropped straight off the pier.
rope goes tight when goliath is on. waited 5 minutes. pulled him to the surface, shook the rope and the hook came right out of the corner of his mouth.
great for one-time experience. im not into fishing for what i cant eat though.
