Penn Metal Senator
- ICAST SPECIAL PURCHASE
This is something to get excited about, to tell your friends about. I scored the buy of buys at the ICAST show. Through the years we've had some dandy buys posted on this page, but I think this one takes the cake. During the ICAST show in Orlando last week, while talking to Penn's Sales Manager, I noticed that they had some inventory on this reel. Frankly, I thought I'd bought all that were available at the time of the Fred Hall Show in March of this year. At that time we offered the reel at $188, a dandy special and we sold out. Penn could not supply more to me. They were planning on exporting the rest of their inventory out of this country. Well, that did not happen. So, six months later they still showed some inventory, about 270 pieces. I made 'em an offer at the show, they took the bait and we cleared 'em out. Guys, I don't care how many 4/0's you've got, this is a great reel to own, and we've got 'em at about 1/2 price. It does not get any better than this for a 4/0, machined aluminum reel, with robust drags, full metal construction - no plastic housing..., very good bearings, strong performance and design - at a price that's too good to pass up. Whether you're using 'em for trolling, casting, jigging or flylining a bait, fishing 30 to 50# line, this reel is well worth grabbing. For a lot of private boaters, this is all you'll need for tuna trolling. Heading to Baja, it's perfect for fishing off a panga. Long range fishing, you can't have too many 4/0's.
The reel was made to sell for $230,
we're selling them for $119 - INCLUDING SHIPPING!
Background: The 113 Metal version arrived in 2007, and then Penn announced that they could not afford to produce them here in America after the first run of the much anticipated reel. Further, they would not be coming forward with the proposed follow-up 114 MTL. That made this an "orphan" in their line, something that will be limited to around 600 pieces produced, with no more coming. For collectors, and fishermen looking for a dandy reel to fish, the 113MTL should be of prime interest. The MTL has a unique design, robust construction, versa-stack drags for extended range of use - and higher potential drag capability. The 113MTL carries a manufacturers suggested retail of $230, we've got 'em here for less, a lot less.
I first played with one at ICAST in 2007. Kind of reminded me of a Pro Gear, except it's a better value...at $230. The reel uses Stainless steel in the pinion gears and main gears, precision machined - NOT BRASS - that makes it a stronger reel with better long term performance. There are three high-quality shielded stainless steel ball bearings. Unlike gimmicky unshielded bearings that clog with contaminants and salt buildup, Penn's higher-grade stainless steel ball bearings were designed for performance in a marine environment. High-grade stainless bearings are better than coated, non-shielded bearings. That's why this will be a long-lived reliable addition to your fishing arsenal. The 113 MTL uses Penn's soft-grip ergonomic fighting handle, designed for angler comfort and power & leverage. The reel features an aluminum frame and spool and best of all, it's an Integrated Side Plate design. Yep, like the Torques, this reel features the patented I.S.P. This gives the reel a more rigid assembly, enabling the reel to achieve higher drag settings with fewer parts. The higher gear ratio and a super strong ISP double dog anti-reverse system provide you with speed AND power. The reel also incorporates Penn's Versa-Drag, allowing for a wider range of drag settings. On the left sideplate you'll also find a bearing adjustment cap, allowing you to eliminate excessive end play. It's not a "backlash" preventer, it's a bearing adjustment cap. You can reduce side to side motion or opt to induce more freespool play (.003-.005"). Bottom line, typically robust Penn 113 with lessons learned from the Baja Special applied to a more standard sized reel. For my money, a guy can never have too many 4/0 reels. For a lot of guys, this reel makes great sense to own. - and we make it easier for YOU to own!
(4.25:1 Gearing, 475 yds of 30# mono line capacity, weight...not exactly sure yet)
The reel was made to sell for $230,
Looks like a great deal. Thought that I would share this weekly special from Charkbait.
