Didnt plan on fishing this weekend. Decided about 3pm that I was gonna head to the SSP and fish the afternoon/evening outgoing tide. Got there about 4:30pm, loaded up on pins in the shallows in case there was no bait in the alley. Turns out bait was everywhere and easy to sabiki. Pier wasnt crowded at all for a Sunday. Stopped at 128, first bait in the water at 5:05ish, landed a 13" red grouper within 2 minutes. Nothing else the next 15 minutes so I moved to the alley. From 6:00 to about 7:00 I landed about 7 or 8 short gags, the last one I caught was the biggest at 20 inches. Sun started goin down and about 8pm landed my first mango of the day, a 13 incher. Caught 3 more that were 13+ fat inches by 9:15 or so. Ran out of bait but wanted to try to get my limit so I sabikied about a dozen or so more greenbacks. Tried like hell to get the final one but it wasnt happening. No more bites at all. Used the last bait about 11pm and headed out. Freelined some pins here and there in between with no luck, but did land about an 18 inch ladyfish just before dark. Tried soaking some chunks of it while fishing for more snapper, no takers. All fish were caught on cut greenbacks and threadfins with a 2oz weight out on the rocks. A guy fishing next to me landed a 17 inch trout just after dark on a cut greenback. This was my first trip to the pier in a month. It felt good to get back out there and catch some fish.

Hey Steve, good job. You got there just after I left. Only shorty, 20" and one Mango 13". I gave it to someone cause it wasn't worth briging home one fish. Too bad you didn't getb there a little earlier, you could have had your 5. See ya next time. I''l be out Tuesday in the a.m. till about noon.

Chris, how crowded was it earlier in the day? Seems to me like the new rates are keeping quite a bit of people away.
Of course thats good and bad. The good is there will be more room to fish and less pressure on the fish. The bad is less revenue, which will probably be the excuse they use to close the pier for good.
Guess all we can do is enjoy it while its still open.

Show a loss in revenue, bait shops can't keep up with their share of lost revenue and then what choice is left. At the risk of sounding like Dooms Day Jack, I think you hit the nail on the head.
