I'm probably totally screwing this all up. This is probably not located in the proper place. Sorry. I've been reading the board for a while. I actually been introduced to the Sky Way Pier a short while ago. I moved down here from Ct. last year. I'm hooked!! I have a question. I have managed to pluck a few Mango Snapper at the end of the SSP with green backs. Can any one suggest any other spot on the SSP or NSP for some snapper and what is the best bait to use? I would appreciate any kind of input. Thanks. Sorry if I screwed up the post. Newbie!

even tho you totally messed up this board...lol I usually use an egg sinker with bout a foot, foot and half of leader with a regular sized hook. move around to pilings. if you dont get a hit within in 10 minutes time to try a different one or a different area by that piling. Also sometimes you can scare them from a spot if you break one off or miss a good hook set. Then its time to move again.

Thanks guy for all the help. I went out to SSP on Friday night. I managed to pull 7 Spanish, 1 short trout, a 16" snapper, and one really short red grouper; about 6" lol. I guess it was an ok night. I would have liked have gotten a few more snappers! lol. I think I might be heading to SSP again tomorrow. I'll post a report if I end up going. I might have some honey dews. Honey do this, do that. I'm sure you guys know all about that. Thanks again.

to be a little more specific, use a sliding sinker about start w/ 1/4 oz. and up depending on current flow and use 25lb to 30lb leader about 1 1/2 foot w/ a size 1 or 2 "J" hook (sorry haven't fished gulf for a while so if its circles only for reef fish then get a 2/0 circle). and work the rock piles.
the piling slants are 100% accurate and "ID" rock piles or artificial reefs. i seem to slay them day and night but night seems to draw big KW grunts too.

Welcome aboard, jin. You will now be addicted to fishing the area.
You can also try freelining live bait out to the rockpiles/reefs with the outgoing tide (or towards the Skyway bridge on incoming tides...its a bit tricky but it can be done)...sometimes the snapper bite is better in the reefs than the pilings (especially at night), and youll also have a better chance of by-catching other species such as sharks, grouper, grunts, cobes, etc.
Keep us posted on how youre doin!
