Hey guys, I used to post some on the old website, I'm not really sure what happened to it. Luckily I found this one though, some helpful info for a vacation warrior like me. Anyway, I'll be down here for the rest of the week (until 6/27) and just was wondering if anyone had any advice they could give me on what to target? I like to target anything that's big, usually I end up going for Sharks, Cobia, Tarpon, etc. But I enjoy catching anything.... Grouper, Spanish Mackeral, etc, I'm not picky. lol I usually make it to the Skyway Pier's once or twice a year and fish a week at a time. I did some fishing yesterday and last night. Caught some small Snapper, a 20 inch Trout, had 2 fish break my line. As far as targeting Shark's this time of year is it better to stay in the shallower water or out towards the end?? Or am I better off just going to Ft. Desoto for Sharks? Last time I went to Ft. Desoto at night the Shark fishing was awesome! Any advice that you guys can give me I'd appreciate, even if it's not particulary for the Skyway, I'm staying at Reddington Beach and will go anywhere in the area if there's a good bite going on. I don't get to do too much fishing in Florida and just want to make the best out of what time I do have. Thanks guys. -Zakk

Tried the North Pier again last night...windy and rough of course. I did manage to get my Girlfriend hooked up to what I'm pretty sure was a Tarpon. I had a live Pinfish on one of my smaller poles with a 1 ounce weight, letting it drift around the east side bridge pilings...it sat there for a while without any hits at all, she had the pole right in front of her when it just got nailed, if she hadn't have grabbed the pole it would have went over the side...the fish started peeling line off the reel and then jumped all the way over on the other side of the east side pier. Looked like a Tarpon. Besides that all we got was a keeper Snapper, Ladyfish, Trout, and a Bluefish. It was pretty slow fishing, kind of tough with the conditions. But it's supposed to start calming down so I'm going to go try it again of course.

Welcome to the forum!
Sounds like your doing just fine dude! just beef up the tackle most of us Rats use 65 or bigger power pro line. 1 oz or less sinker.. 1/0 for the snaps and trout, 7/0 on up for the gags..

Hey guys, thanks. I saw that thread about the beach Snook earlier. That sounds like some awesome fishing! Do you think I can catch them right here off the Beach beside the old Redington Pier?? Dead bait like Pinfish?? I'd guess as far as set-up for it goes just a basic carolina rig??
And yeah man I use pretty big gear when I'm going for the big fish. 30-40lb Mono line, Penn 3/0 - 6/0 reels, and usually 10/0 Khale Hooks, they seem to work awesome for the grouper and about everything else. But I was fishing with my little Snapper gear when I had the break offs....still not totally sure what it was, maybe a Shark or something??
I tried again tonight on the north pier, did not catch even one good fish...only had a couple hours at most before some really tough Thunderstorms rolled up. Really sucks, but I still have a couple more days at least. Hopefully the wind will calm down!!

Oh okay, I just am so used to using them around home. I hate Circles, I guess just because really setting the hook is part of the fun for me. I've never had them injure a fish or anything, I use a 10/0, which is a lot harder for them to swallow.
Well my last nite at the pier (Thursday) I finally hooked into something huge. I had a whole Spanish Mackeral straight down on the side of the west pier that is facing the east....it was there about 30 minutes and then my clicker started screaming, I set the hook and it peeled about every inch of 80b mono off my 6/0 senator, I locked my drag down as hard as I could and it still was peeling line off. The fight only lasted about a minute or two before the fish had ran all the way under the actual skyway bridge (yes the run cars drive over, not the pier!) and then kept going. I just couldn't stop it...hundreds of line peeled off my reel in no time and then it was over....a very sad moment for me. lol. I can honestly say it was one of the biggest fish I've ever hooked. I believe it was a huge Shark, it definitely wasn't a jewfish. A few other guys were out there and said it might have been a Cobia by the way it ran but if that was a Cobia it was a world record because I have caught Cobia and sure have never felt one like this...lol
All in all it was still a great time just being out there though, fishing wise I had a tough time this year for some reason, but I'm not complaining. I just wish I could come more often.

might have been a dolphin. lately those guys have been eating my greenbacks on the bottom. Its gotten to where i will dangle the bait in the water and jerk it out before they can get it just to irritate them like they do me.
You want this flipper...Hear you go...Yoink...Haha Repeat.

Nah, trust me I have had my encounter with them plenty of times out there...lol But this was no dolphin...I'm guessing it probably was a Shark...I've caught big Shark and that's what it felt like.
